Reese's Pumpkins

Did you know that houses with black shutters are 77 percent more likely to hand out Kit Kats than other houses? Yeah, me neither. Weird. If I had a black shutters (or even a house, for that matter), I’d be compelled now to ensure that I didn’t hand out Kit Kats. That’s just how I roll. But that and other rather odd facts can be found in a press release issued by Hershey’s.

They’re also happy to announce that this year will also see a variety of new snack sized candies (including Hershey’s Kisses) for trick-or-treaters. Apparently nobody bothered to read my scientific (ahem) study of smaller sized candies. But I will admit those Reese’s pumpkins are really darn cute.

I don’t know what it is with me this spring – first I reviewed Barbie chocolates, and now I’m chowing down with Disney. Courtesy of the All Candy Expo stash, I got to try these whimsical little chocolates before they hit the market.

As it turns out, you get a three-tiered Disney bonanza with these babies.

Candy Review: Twizzlers Sweet and Sour Filled Twists

Twizzlers Sweet and Sour

The last few Twizzler spin-offs haven’t really been anything special for me. Despite the popularity of the cinnamon variety, they just weren’t my thing. The same holds true for the less popular Rainbow Twizzlers. Actually, I don’t really care for any Twizzlers that aren’t the strawberry or cherry flavors.

At the All Candy Expo, I was given a complimentary tote bag to lug around all the goodies I would be receiving, and it happened to be already filled by an assortment of products, including those donated by Hershey’s. I guess they were trying really hard to make sure no one in press missed any of their new products.

It wasn’t until I began cataloging my hoard that I even noticed the red and yellow Twizzlers in my bag. “New Twizzlers Sweet and Sour Filled Twists” the wrapper advertised. I wouldn’t have every picked these up at a store, but since I was given them it couldn’t hurt to try them.

Candy Review: Reese’s, Special Dark, Almond Joy and York Pieces

Hershey's Pieces

To me, one of the most exciting announcements at this year’s All Candy Expo was the addition of three new additions to the Pieces lineup. Never knew there was a Pieces lineup? Well, there is now, with Hershey’s Special Dark, Almond Joy and York Pieces joining the familiar Reese’s. But are these new additions worthy successors to the mantle of everyone’s favorite candy-coated peanut butter treat? (The Hershey’s folks threw in a sample pack of Reese’s Pieces too, so I’m doing a bonus review of those as well.)

Retro Candy Flashback: Heath Bar

Heath Bar Bag

The Heath bar is not one of Hershey’s more talked about products, but it certainly is known throughout the world. Without thinking twice, people recognize it as “that toffee in chocolate bar.” That simple description is pretty accurate. Yes, the Heath Bar is a piece of English toffee, made of almonds, sugar and butter, coated in milk chocolate.

The bar debuted back in 1928 as the lead product for Heath Brothers Confection. Like many retro candies that amassed a following from that time, the Heath Bar sprang onto the national scene during the Great Depression, when candy was consumed in large amounts due to its abundance and reduced cost.

Sales for the product took off during WWII, after the army became one of the leading purchasers because the bar had an amazing resiliency and could be carried to the battlefield. After the war, soldiers helped spread the news of the candy. It wasn’t long after that this candy became entrenched in the confection world by becoming a leading ingredient in everything from cookies to ice cream.
