Candy Review: Paddywackle’s Swedish-Spice Almond Brittle

Paddywackle's Swedish Spice Almond Brittle

Well, I now know I’m no Swede. I tried Paddywackle’s Swedish-Spice Almond Brittle and I just can’t muster up the taste for it. I really tried. It had all the right components to be delicious… the texture is perfect, the crunch is exquisite, the ingredients are definitely gourmet and of high quality. It has the perfect stick in your teeth-ness that you want and expect out of brittle. It’s buttery and it has almonds. I love the old-fashioned bags the brittle comes in and think the packaging really says “gourmet and hand-made”. But, it’s not quite enough to overcome the unpleasant flavor. The problem is the spice, I think. Maybe I’m not partial to cardamom, or maybe it’s the hint of lemon. I just can’t quite put my finger on what it is I don’t like.

One of my co-workers absolutely LOVED the Swedish-spice brittle. She’s also the type that loves those spicy, ginger, hard candies. She mentioned she had Indian the evening before so maybe her palate was ripe for the flavor. The other 8 or so folks were in consensus and didn’t really care for the spice. One person even commented that it was like eating butter and some “non-toxic, natural” cleaning solution. Another was really impressed with the stick-in-your-teeth factor, but didn’t like the flavor, either. For these reasons, I think it would be worth trying Paddywackle’s other flavors because as I said, all the other details are perfect. Maybe their chocolate almond or original recipe peanut brittle would be a better example for us non-exotic brittle-lovers? I will have to try their other flavors because now I’ve got a craving for brittle!

Editor’s note: I tried the brittle also and thought it was quite delicious. it had a nice flavor with just a little subtle lemony flavor to it. I don’t think I would have even called it “spiced”. I liked it and so did my co-workers that I shared it with.

Candy Review: Classy Karma Candy

Classy Karma Candy

With the popularity of yoga and its associated clothing, mats and other accessories, I guess it was only a matter of time until the popular fitness/relaxation stretching regime got its own signature candy – Classy Karma Candy Healthy Yoga Treats. Not that it isn’t a bit illogical – what makes less sense than having a post-workout candy treat to gain back all those lost calories?

Ah, but this is a healthy treat – or so the promotional material I received at the All Candy Expo claims. It’s “12 TIMES MORE POTENT than synthetic vitamin C,” contains “ALL NUTURAL (sic) ANTI AGING properties from powerful antioxidants,” and is made with “all-natural berries and spices with no processed sugar.” (The ingredients, however, say otherwise – the first two ingredients are sugar and glucose, which don’t just pop out of the sugarcane without SOME level of processing.)

These are made by the Classy Candy Company, a new company – as far as I could tell, the candies are only available for sale on Classy Candy’s website (which was clearly written by a non-native English speaker – I found its enthusiastic, if slightly fractured, copy kind of charming).

Candy Review: Das Foods’ Das Lolli Assortment

Das Lolli

When I think of lollipops, I think of, well… lollipops. I try not to read too much into the whole adult humor and related connotations that can be associated with such a candy. Apparently, the folks at Das Foods think differently than I do.

I was supposed to receive a shipment from them, but for some reason it never arrived at my doorstep, but as luck would have it, they were attending the All Candy Expo, which provided me an opportunity to pick up some samples on site.

It was hard to miss to the Das Foods booth; they hired four dancers from UIUC to perform a Das Lolli dance routine and socialize with the attending clientele. Since most of the people attending the convention were males, I suppose their ploy worked, as there was always a crowd at their booth.

Even the packaging (think something circular within a square, plastic wrapper that isn’t candy) or the taglines of “What’s your flava?” and “Shamefully delicious lollipops” are begging for an adult audience, which is odd given the premise that these are all natural lollipops made without preservatives, HFC, and chemical additives. Seems like a good thing to give your kids, but I’m not sure how you explain what exactly “Man Bait” is supposed to mean…
