Cadbury Creme Egg Muffin

I was reading through my roster of food blogs the other day when I came upon a recipe for Cadbury Creme Egg Muffins at Baking Bites. These are muffins with mini Cadbury Creme Eggs baked in the centers! I have to say it is totally ingenious to use a muffin recipe. After all, Cadbury Creme Eggs are about as sweet and sugary as you can get, so the pairing of the sweet candy eggs with a nice vanilla muffin is ideal. If you want to make something extra special this Easter, I bet this would be an awesome treat!

Cadbury: “Our Eggs Aren’t Smaller, You Are Bigger”

Cadbury Creme Egg Half

Easter has come and gone and many are still enjoying the bounty of Easter candy; either from friends, family, sales or the Easter Bunny himself. This year, though, I found that one of my favorite Easter treats had changed. No, I’m not referring to the fact that Cadbury’s Creme Egg came out in an Orange flavor. I mean that this year’s Cadbury Creme Egg is smaller than last years!

I noticed it when I was looking for the nutritional information and found a box I had saved from last year’s stash. When I compared it to the numbers on the new boxes, I was surprised when the numbers were different and then I realized that this year’s egg is 5 grams smaller. Interesting.

I guess I am not the only one who realized that the Cadbury Eggs this year were, well, a little less substantial. Actor B.J. Novak from “The Office” brought the issue up on a recent episode of “Late Night with Conan O’Brian” and had visual proof to back up his story. Watch the clip below:

The Cadbury site now has a FAQ that answers the question “Why has the size of the egg changed?”:

As the world’s largest confectionery company, Cadbury Schweppes is committed to developing great-tasting products that you, the consumer loves. Since people’s preferences vary from market to market, so do our products. This is reflected in the broad variety of sizes and flavours of products that we offer our consumers worldwide.

That’s some great PR spin on why they got smaller. Anyone else noticed this (or other candy) being smaller?

Bird Tries to Hatch Cadbury Creme Eggs

Pippa the Cockatoo, Photo from BBC News

Pippa, a cockatoo living at the Nuneaton and Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary in the UK, has apparently been protecting an open bowl of chocolate eggs for over two weeks. According to her owner, Geoff Grewcock:

“She went straight over, climbed on the creme eggs and that was it. She thinks they’re her eggs. Until she clicks they’re not real eggs, we’ll just leave her there.”

As long as the bird is happy with doing this, I suppose it’s fine, but I wonder if that cockatoo is actually part Cadbury bunny?

Easter Candy Review: Orange Cadbury Creme Egg

Orange Cadbury Creme Egg package

I was really, really excited to hear about this new addition to the Cadbury Creme Egg Easter lineup. I have been an extremely loyal Cadbury Creme Egg fan over the years (I blame it on my mom never buying them for me as a kid and then “discovering” them in high school) but I am also an extremely picky Cadbury Creme Egg follower. I mean that in the best of ways. So far I have not come across a variation of the Cadbury Creme Egg that has lived up to the original in my opinion. Not the minis (the ratios are WAY off), not the caramel (what, no white or yolk in my egg?) and not the chocolate creme (tasted of greasiness and not chocolate). When I heard of an Orange Cadbury Creme Egg being released I eager to try it because it sounded like a variation that is still faithful to the original, yet different enough to seem new.

I felt in order to properly judge my first Orange Cadbury Creme Egg I had to have an original Cadbury Creme Egg tasting first. I haven’t had one since last May or so (my “stashes” never seem to last as long as I’d like) and it’s just as delicious as I remember. Sweet, creamy milk chocolate with a slight graininess (which I love because I find that it’s a great texture contrast) with the fondant center being thick, smooth and so sweet. It never fails to give that wonderful sugar rush.

Orange Cadbury Creme Egg

The Orange Cadbury Creme Egg upon unwrapping it looks just like the Cadbury Creme Egg except with a faint orange smell. Taking my first nibble of chocolate only from the very top I found the orange flavoring in the chocolate shell to be very good, light and orangey. Thoughts and memories of all the other orange flavored chocolates I’ve had in the past come immediately to mind, which is a good thing. The real orange kick comes from creme center, which I wasn’t expecting. It is much more orangey than the chocolate! It’s very intense with a very fresh citrus tang to it. I am experiencing not only orange, but I taste grapefruit and lemon notes in it as well.

Overall all I am very, very impressed. Now I am going to have to have two Cadbury Creme Egg stashes, one of the regular and now one of the orange. I hope they bring this one back next year. It’s a delicious twist on a classic favorite.

Chocolate Covered Sugar Babies

Lots of quick candy reviews, not worthy of their own posts, but worth mentioning…

  • Looking for Slammers this weekend, I found Hershey’s Whoppers Milkshake milk instead and tried it. It really does taste like a malty milkshake only it’s not frozen, just cold. It is SUPER sweet – too sweet really. The 14 oz. bottle of thick milk serves two but who drinks half a bottle? Oh, and you don’t want to know how much fat and calories are in this thing.
  • I also ran across a new Limited Edition candy I had not heard of before so I picked up a box: Chocolate-Covered Sugar Babies. Overall, I wasn’t impressed. The chocolate was waxy and just like the chocolate on Milk Duds. The chocolate slid off almost totally at the first bite and never really mixed with the caramel of the Sugar Babies. If you like Sugar Babies, stick to the original.
  • I also tried a Milky Way Ice Cream Bar. Oh yeah. Just as good as the Snickers Ice Cream Bar. Fan-freakin’-tastic.
  • I ate a Cadbury Twirl Friday that my wife picked up for me at the World Market. It’s a British chocolate candy that is very smooth and has lots of layers running the length of the roll. It has a bit of an odd taste to it at first but it ended up being pretty good. I recommend it if you like the distinctive taste of Cadbury chocolate.
  • Wrigley’s Extra Watermelon Gum is really good. It has a great watermelon taste and really does last extra long.
