Candy Review: Chuao Breakfast in Bed Collection

Categories: Candy,Candy Reviews,Chocolate Candy

chuao breakfast in bed bonbons
Chuao Chocolatier isn’t a household name (yet) but we have covered their products many times here on Candy Addict® and almost without fail their products are delicious (my favorite is their Firecracker with popping candy). So, my hopes were high for their Mother’s Day special – the Breakfast in Bed Collection – with five bonbons inspired by breakfast. Unfortunately, they did not live up to my expectations.

For this review, I let my wife try each of them first (by eating half of each bonbon) since she is a mother and is the audience this product is aimed at. I noted her reaction/thoughts, then I tried each. Below is the summary of each flavor.

Candy Review: Nunu Chocolates’ Bacon Toffee Bar

Categories: Awesomely Addictive Candy,Candy,Candy Reviews,Chocolate Candy,Gourmet Candy

Nunu Chocolates Bacon Toffee BarFans of highly processed dime-a-dozen sweets, perhaps this particular indulgence isn’t up your alley. With just 8 ingredients (the majority of which most kindergarteners are familiar with), Nunu Chocolates’ Bacon Toffee Bar seems like far less of a devilish indulgence than what you might find at the checkout line of your local grocery store. Of course, I’m not about to suggest that anything incorporating bacon deserves a nutritional halo, and since the version used in this recipe is apparently not certified organic, it’s likely factory farmed which brings up an additional slew of red flags…but Candy Addict® is all about edible escapism, so let’s regroup, shall we?

Candy Review: Mo’s Dark Bacon Bar

mo's dark chocolate bacon bar

A few years ago, we reviewed Mo’s Bacon Bar – a milk chocolate bar filled with bacon. The verdict was that the bar was good, but that maybe the milk chocolate didn’t quite have what it takes to stand up to the applewood smoked bacon. Well, I found Mo’s Dark Bacon Bar at World Market, and I’m here to tell you what I think. Does the dark chocolate make the bacon sing?

Does bacon even sing?

Candy Review: Das Foods’ Das Lolli Assortment

Das Lolli

When I think of lollipops, I think of, well… lollipops. I try not to read too much into the whole adult humor and related connotations that can be associated with such a candy. Apparently, the folks at Das Foods think differently than I do.

I was supposed to receive a shipment from them, but for some reason it never arrived at my doorstep, but as luck would have it, they were attending the All Candy Expo, which provided me an opportunity to pick up some samples on site.

It was hard to miss to the Das Foods booth; they hired four dancers from UIUC to perform a Das Lolli dance routine and socialize with the attending clientele. Since most of the people attending the convention were males, I suppose their ploy worked, as there was always a crowd at their booth.

Even the packaging (think something circular within a square, plastic wrapper that isn’t candy) or the taglines of “What’s your flava?” and “Shamefully delicious lollipops” are begging for an adult audience, which is odd given the premise that these are all natural lollipops made without preservatives, HFC, and chemical additives. Seems like a good thing to give your kids, but I’m not sure how you explain what exactly “Man Bait” is supposed to mean…

Candy Review: Archie McPhee Wasabi, Bacon, and Meatball Gumballs

Categories: Candy,Candy Reviews,Gross Candy,Gum,Novelty Candy,Weird Candy

meatball gumballs

I am a huge fan of Archie McPhee. My bathroom is decorated with their matching sushi-themed shower curtain, rug, and trash can; I have their band-aids that look like Crime Scene tape, their toy gun that catapults pigs, their little squeaky monk who’s talking on the phone and drinking coffee…. But you’ll notice something all those items have in common: none of them are supposed to be eaten, or even, like this gum, just chewed.

So here’s the thing: I love the concepts of all of these gums just like I love the concepts of their other products. Gumballs that look like meatballs, wasabi gum – this stuff tickles me to death. But, here at Candy Addict, we are about actually eating things. So: are these just joke gifts, or would a person really want to eat them?
