Classic Candy Review: Snickers

Snickers Bar
Although Snickers has satisfied the world for over 75 years now, it has been some years since I’ve actually bought and eaten one. I had pretty much overdosed on them during my pregnancy, when I craved Snickers every day for several months (or just used the cravings excuse as a way to justify daily chocolate eating)!

These days there are so many interesting candy bars available, the tried-and-true don’t often get chosen when I’m in the mood for a sugar fix. After eating one for the purposes of this review, I remembered why those cravings were so nice to have. Snickers is really the granddaddy of all candy bars and it’s not difficult to taste why.

Upon eating it, I was reminded why Snickers is such a popular choice – there is just something very appealing about the different textures it offers. The smooth, slightly squishy nougat, the stretchy caramel, and the crunchy peanuts, all wrapped up in a soft chocolate coating makes this bar almost irresistible.

Candy Review: Snickers Rockin’ Nut Road

Categories: Candy, Candy Reviews, Chocolate Candy, Limited Edition Candy, New Candy

Snickers Rockin Nut Road
I thought I’d try something different with this review… consider it a kind of “stream of consciousness” review. I’m going to write what comes to mind as I try the Snickers Rockin’ Nut Road.

The new Rockin’ Nut Road Snickers wrapper promises “almonds, caramel and marshmallow-flavored nougat wrapped in dark chocolate” - sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? Opening it, there really is no real aroma at all. Biting into it, I see that the nougat is snow white so not only does it taste like marshmallow, it looks like marshmallow too. The one thing that hits me, besides the marshmallow taste, is that it’s not overly sweet like a regular Snickers can be.

The Rockin’ Nut Road Snickers is very s’mores-ish tasting and the almond gives it a similar consistency that graham crackers would. The almond flavor isn’t very strong though - the most prevalent flavor is the marshmallow nougat. I don’t really taste the caramel at all, which is a shame because I really love caramel. The choice to go with dark chocolate was a wise move - Snickers milk chocolate would have made it too sweet.

Candy Review: Snickers Charged

Snickers Charged Wrapped

Heads up everyone, ’cause there’s a new candy bar in town: Snickers Charged. This new version of the Snickers bar means business with its flashy, bright silver wrapper, red accents, and an image of a snorting, angry-looking rhino on the front. How is this Snickers different, you ask? Well, this Snicker’s limited edition contains caffeine, taurine and B vitamins to provide a big energy surge to help you get though your busy day.

The first thing I did was flip this candy over to see what it was really made of, even though the flavor description remains the same: milk chocolate, peanuts, caramel, and nougat. Upon inspecting the ingredients, there’s 60mg of caffeine, 250mg of taurine, and 10% of your daily value of Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, biotin and Pantothenic Acid in this Snickers. There’s also 4% calcium and 2% iron in there too. Considering all these additions, the size of this Snickers bar is slightly smaller than the average one, weighing in at 1.83 oz where the original as at 2.06 oz. I guess that extra .23oz with caffeine would have been too much to handle!

Candy Review: Snickers Adventure Bar

Snicker's Adventure Candy Bar

The new Snickers Adventure Bar is a limited edition tie-in with the new Indian Jones movie: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Obviously, they aren’t available yet, but here at Candy Addict you’re getting a sneak peek! The packaging design is nice, with an image of Indy from the original trilogy posters on it.

The tag line on the side says “New Flavor Kick!” but doesn’t exactly say what. The back of the bar hints at the flavor combination with a description of a “cliffhanger kick of exotic spice and a hint of sweet coconut.” Sounds interesting! Also on the back the wrapper has “Arti-FACTs” on them which are Indiana Jones’ and Snickers’ information. The one I got was fact 8/8 and listed a scene location for Temple of Doom in Shanghai and claiming Snickers as the #1 selling bar in China.

Candy Review: Snickers Nut ‘n Butter Crunch

Snickers Nut 'n Butter Crunch

It’s not an everyday event that a new limited edition slips by me. I’m always searching for what the companies are coming out with next. Which is why I was so surprised to walk into my local convenience store and see a Snickers staring at me with a bright and different wrapper. It’s too bad no one with me had a camera, because the double take I made was nothing short of cinematic. How could a new Snickers show up without me knowing about it first?

The new candy on the block is Snickers Nut ‘n Butter Crunch. The wrapper is a bright red-orange with the description: “milk chocolate, peanuts and creamy peanut butter taste.” Sounds interesting! The aroma hints that there’s lots of peanut butter in there. It smells like a Reese’s: sweet chocolate and a salty roasted peanut butter aroma.

Quickie Candy Reviews: Twix, Snickers, 3 Musketeers, Hi-Chew, and Tung Toos

Categories: Candy, Candy Reviews, Chocolate Candy, Foreign (non-US) Candy, Gummi/Gummy Candy, Mint Candy

A few quick reviews to make you hungry:

Twix PBTwix PB: It’s not too sweet, which is nice. The Twix PB had some good flavor, but overall, it just didn’t do it for me. It’s just not truly a Twix for me unless it has caramel in it. The chocolate cookie was a nice touch though. Overall, it’s not bad, but not great.

Snickers DarkSnickers Dark: Snickers Dark is back on the market for good after being a Limited Edition. If ever there has been a case for milk chocolate over dark, this is it. Regular, milk chocolate Snickers is sooooo much better. This barely tasted like a Snickers! Skip the Dark.

mint_3_musketeers.jpg3 Musketeers Mint: Rachel tried this a while back and wasn’t thrilled with it. I thought it was great. It had plenty of minty goodness for me and tasted like a York Peppermint Patty in bar form. Good stuff.

Hi-Chew Green AppleHi-Chew Green Apple: Hi-Chew is a Japanese favorite and this is the first flavor I have tried. WOW! Loved it! Oddly rubbery at first but turns chewy and super-delicious. If you like sour apple flavor you must try it. Now I want to try all the Hi-Chew flavors!

tung_toos.jpgTung Toos: We first mentioned these over a year ago and I finally got to try them now. They don’t have a ton of flavor since they are more for fun than for “eating”, but they are definitely fun. They’re the kind of thing my six-year old daughter loves. It’s just not really an adult thing.

I ain’t got no sneakers

Categories: Candy, Chocolate Candy

sneaker.jpg

Despite the title, this is candy-related, just stay with me…..

On the last day of the All Candy Expo I have to drop my suitcases off at the bag check at the show since I had to check out of the hotel already. As I pay the $2 per bag for someone who is “Not Responsible For Lost Items” to watch my laptop and my many pounds of candy, I get the ticket from the young candy-less lady working there I think to myself “I should get some candy for her - I bet she would appreciate that.”

As I get my ticket I say to her, “Would you like some candy? Tell me what kind you like and I’ll try and get some for you.”

“I ain’t got no sneakers”, she tells me.

I look at her shoes and wonder why she thinks I can get her some sneakers. Does she think it’s the All Shoe Expo? Why is she asking for sneakers? I say “You need sneakers?” in a totally befuddled voice.

She: “Sneakers!”
Me: “Sneakers? You need sneakers???”

Obviously, there is some miscommunication going on here. Why does she think I can get her some shoes? Finally, another worker comes by and says “Snickers. She wants Snickers.”

“Oh!!!!”, I say. “I’ll see what I can do.”

It’s all I can do to keep myself from busting out laughing now. As I turn around I break into a huge grin and laugh quietly to myself. She wants a chocolately, peanutty, nougat-filled candy bar, not athletic shoes! The woman wants Snickers!

I didn’t get any Snickers for her, but found a few other candies I thought she might like. She didn’t mention the Sneakers shortage when I gave them to her and I didn’t mention it either.

This is a true story. I can’t make stuff like that up.

Candy Recipe: Snickers Fudge

Snickers fudge

How do you know when a candy has reached the height of popularity? Sales, marketing, limited edition versions and the “test of time” are all good ways to tell, but you know you have a real winner when devoted fans start incorporating the candy flavors at home. That’s exactly what Joe over at “Culinary in the Country” did when he made some delicious looking Snickers Fudge.

The recipe looks difficult, but it isn’t as involved as it first seems. The only catch is that it’s takes a long time to make since you create four different layers that need to individually set. Joe is a Snickers connoisseur and says the recipe accurately captures the flavors of the beloved candy bar. Be sure to visit Joe’s blog for the recipe. This is homemade candy making at it’s best!

Candy Review: Limited Edition Snickers Dark

Categories: Candy, Candy Reviews, Chocolate Candy, Limited Edition Candy, New Candy

Snickers Dark - Limited Edition

I ran into these at a local store while grocery shopping last week. The combination of the words “limited edition” and the price of 5 for $2 was far too tempting to resist. They were announced last June, and they also come in a Dark with Almond variety, but I haven’t found any of them yet.

I figured the taste wouldn’t be that different from a regular Snickers. I’ve had dark chocolate many times, and while it’s not my favorite, I can eat it no problem. The Snickers Dark however is so chocolatey. It tastes like the entire bar is full of chocolate, instead of just being coated in it. It was actually pretty good, and I’m sure dark chooclate fans will be super excited that they’re being catered to, but the chocolate was overpowering to the other flavors in the bar. That’s how dark chocolate tends to taste, at least for me, that sort of bitter aftertaste sticking around and covering up the caramel, nuts and nougat.

Snickers Dark - Limited Edition bite

I still prefer the traditional Snickers, but dark chocolate fans will probably disagree.

Snickers Super Bowl Commercial

Categories: Candy, Candy Videos, Chocolate Candy

I was actually on board a cruise ship in the Caribbean (more about that soon) during the Super Bowl, so I missed this commercial when it was first shown. I didn’t even know about it until yesterday when someone sent me an email about it. I’m not sure why this guy thought I was Snickers or Mars or really why he thought this site has anything to do with Snickers. You’d be surprised how many oddball emails about candy I get. This is the actual email I received:

I have to express my discontent on the Super Bowl commercial advertisement which features two men kissing after eating the same candy bar. As a family man, I was disgusted, to have that display of disregard and inconsideration from corporation which once consisted of better family values. You can be sure that my support for your products as ended.

The snicker bar company has hit a new low and I say new, because, with all the crude companies out there, no one knows what to expect from their commercials; I would have never expected the one company which would push the envelope this year would be the one company that we love the most.

I will discontinue consuming. I have the eyes and ears of over 450 families in my circle of friends and families. You can count on me sharing my discontent with them as well.

It turns out there was a enough backlash form the public about the commercial that Snickers has pulled the ad. Even the supporting websites for the ad now redirect to the main Snickers website.

So what do you think - is the commercial funny? disturbing? offensive? Leave a comment!
