Candy for the Cure: Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer M&M’s
As you wander around the candy aisles this October, you’ll no doubt notice an array of Halloween-themed bags, with pumpkins, spiders, and bats climbing atop your favorite candy bars. But another color might catch your eye amidst the array of bright orange Halloween bags: the color pink, the official color of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Throughout the month of October, several major candy companies are joining the fight against breast cancer by releasing limited-edition products designed to raise awareness as well as funding toward breast cancer research. My M&M’s will be donating 10% of its “Promise Blend”, an online-only mix of pink and white M&M’s imprinted with a “running ribbon” on one side and “For the CURE” on the other, to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure, an organization dedicated to finding a cure for breast cancer. As with all My M&M’s products, personalized messages are also available on the Promise Blend M&M’s, to allow customers to send messages of encouragement and inspiration to loved ones.

Candy Review: Expired Limited Edition Candy Part II – 100 Grand Dark

100 Grand Dark Chocolate Bar

Crisp rice has always been a favorite staple of mine in the various niches of candy out there. Krackle, Crunch, and of course, 100 Grand all come to mind. It’s never been a candy I think has been fully pushed to its amazing potential, and since the retirement of the Caravelle Bar, I don’t think the world has had any close competitors to assume that challenge.

Regardless, I still like Krackle and 100 Grand bars a great deal (and to a lesser extent Crunch). I just always wished there could be something more to them. I would be willing to try anything that could give crisp rice bars the success they deserve. And in this case, anything meant purchasing the Limited Edition 100 Grand Dark Bar from a candy bin at the Dollar Tree Store, a product that had ceased to be marketed about two years ago.

Like so many candies I didn’t get to try, this one debuted while I lived outside of the U.S., and had made a quick exit before I had the chance to return. But the fact that it had long since expired did little to dissuade me from ripping open the wrapper.

Candy Review: Expired Limited Edition Candy Part I – Hershey’s Special Dark Chocolate: Raspberry Flavored With Macadamia Pieces

Hershey’s Special Dark Logo

We all have our guilty secrets when it comes to candy. Some of us will eat it, even it has fallen to the floor. Some of us will show no hesitation in “sampling” from an opened candy bag in a drugstore aisle. For me, I will eat candy that has long since been removed from the market.

I know, I know… but I can’t help it! With so many limited edition candy products out there, it isn’t always easy to find them all when they’re in season. This past weekend when I was browsing at the Dollar Store, I came across a cornucopia of limited edition candy that had escaped my tasting.

One such product was Hershey’s Special Dark Chocolate: Raspberry Flavored with Macadamia pieces. I scoured Los Angeles when I moved back to the United States a year ago to try these, but they never presented themselves in the California area. You can imagine my joy to see these after all this time in Texas of all places.

Candy Review: Hershey’s Pumpkin Spice and Raspberry Special Dark Kisses

Hershey’s Pumpkin Spice and Raspberry Dark Specials Bags
I enjoy the limited edition Hershey’s Kisses so much that I bestowed the silver medal to them on my Top 10 Best Spinoff Candy list. The varieties they release aren’t always amazing, but when they are, they are.

Lately, there haven’t been very many releases since the 100th Anniversary passed, but every now and then I see a new flavor on the market that I eagerly purchase. For Halloween, they have reissued Candy Corn Kisses (no!), Caramel Apple Kisses (I haven’t been able to find these), and Pumpkin Spice Kisses (on sale this week at Target for two dollars a bag).

Oddly enough, the same day I came across the Pumpkin Spice Kisses, I happened to spot Raspberry Special Dark Kisses at Walgreens. There was nothing Halloween or Autumnal about this bag to indicate why it was being released at this time, but one should not question gifts from the candy gods.

Candy Review Followup: Kai’s Campaign ’08 Candies Bipartisan Set

Kais Candy Election Bipartisan Candies Set

Caitlin told you about these goofy election candies a few weeks ago, but here’s a quick report that the Bipartisan and Republican Sets are now available. (Candy Addict stands firm in maintaining that candy knows no political party; candy loves red, blue, and purple states; and candy always seeks common ground.)

Now, supposedly the McCain face was undergoing a makeover (hmmmm), and yes, his lollipop face doesn’t look too bad because the eyebrows are pronounced. But take a look at McCain on the little candies in the lower part of the photo above. I’m not sure you can tell, but I coulda sworn that was Casper the Ghost! I’m not saying McCain’s old, but… seriously, when you see one of these in person you’ll think it’s a comic book character of the spectral variety.
