Sweet Place: Dylan’s Candy Bar

Dylan's Candy Bar Logo

This past weekend I had the opportunity to go to Dylan’s Candy Bar in New York City. For those of you who are unaware, Dylan’s Candy Bar is run by Ralph Lauren’s daughter Dylan Lauren and the store is considered the closest thing to Willy Wonka in the real life. The store features all different types of candy and is meant to appeal to any candy love, especially the beautiful young New York socialite. I’ve heard so much about this place and was really excited to finally get to see it with my own eyes.

Dylan's Candy Bar Exterior

The outside blends right into the Manhattan street where it sits on the corner of 60th and Third Avenue. Its large windows only hint of what is inside and is decorated with headless models wearing the logo tee shirts (creepy?) and gift baskets bursting with colorful candy.

Candy Art: Heidi Heisse’s Gumball Covered Hummer

Sugar Coated by Heidi Heisse

Back in 2004 (yes, we realize this is technically old news, but Candy Addict wasn’t around in 2004, so it’s new to us), Arizona-based artist Heidi Heisse created a Hummer covered in gumballs. Well, it’s not really a Hummer, it’s just in the shape of a Hummer. The piece, entitled Sugar-Coated, is meant as a social commentary. The description on her website states:

“This life-sized gum-ball covered HumVee comments on pop culture and reminds us of soldiers handing candy to children in far-flung countries at war with us.”

Pretty deep stuff for gumballs, if you ask me.

The Ten Peeps Plagues

Peeps are normally an Easter candy, but someone figured out a way to use them to celebrate Passover too. This Flickr set depicts (in Peeps form) the Ten Plagues that God set upon Egypt. Extremely clever! I particularly like the looks on the faces of the Peeps (yes, they have expressive faces) in Plague 8: Locusts. They’re absolutely terrified! How cute! And a little disturbing…

Jellybean Woman

Jellybean Woman

I would like to submit for the viewing public the above picture, which proves beyond a doubt that there is someone else in this world who has more time on their hands than I do – and they use it in equally odd pursuits.

Now, don’t get me wrong; I love jellybeans, but dang, to make a whole woman out of them? That’s dedication. And yes, it’s a woman – either that, or he’s got some big man boobs. I don’t have much more information on the picture; all I know is that it is or was a storefront display at Selfridges, in London.

Eat to the beat with licorice clothing

Unlike fellow Candy Addict Caitlin, I’m not a fan of licorice. My mind can never parse the idea that this stuff is meant to be candy. However, I can certainly appreciate when someone comes up with a creative use for the sweet, like this winner of a unique fashion show that took place in Hastings, New Zealand. The show contained outfits that were completely edible or recyclable. The idea for the winning dress came from a group of teenagers (naturally), and it was modeled by 15 year-old Saskia van Rijk.

The costume included licorice bracelets, licorice earrings, a fake tongue bought from a joke store and the piece de resistance, a toffee guitar. “They said if we won, I had to break the guitar on the stage, so that’s what I did,” Saskia said. “It smashed really well. “

Rock on! She wins major points from me for the KISS homage too.
