Sweet Places: Walt Disney World Part 1

Walt Disney World Castle

A few months ago I was fortunate enough to join my family on a vacation to Walt Disney World. I was excited to go for many reasons, but one of the biggest was the opportunity to try and find all the interesting candy Disney World had to offer!

Once in the parks, I noticed that there was a pretty standard selection that was offered in all the stores and gift shops (excluding Epcot’s World Showcase, and that’s another entry in itself!). There were a few “normal” candy bars there, like Snickers (can anyone vouch this for me? Remember any others?) and the “standard” theme park fare, like cotton candy (which was so good!).

Despite all the sweets I could choose from, I was most interested in the candy that Disney World offered exclusively. There was a lot to choose from. There was a whole line of bags of lollipops, hard candies, and gummi worms that had Goofy all over them. Mickey laid claim to chocolate with bags of malt balls, chocolate caramels and a few chocolate bars. The Disney Princesses’ weren’t left out either, with beautifully packaged chocolates and lollipops. Pirates of the Caribbean had their cut of stuff too, like a bag of Skull Lollipops.

Candy Circuitry

Candy Circuitry

I’d come up with some excuse you could use – you have a techie boyfriend, or your mom is really into circuitry, or you want to create a dessert that expresses your true inner geekiness – but you really don’t need a reason. Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories, the evil geniuses behind the CandyFab 4000 3D Candy Printer, have come up with an incredibly detailed set of step-by-step instructions so that you, too, can be a master of edible circuitry.

These folks are serious about the task. They suggest you start with a graham cracker, and then they list all available toppings you can use: licorice wheels for red and black wires, Life Savers for resistors, and marshmallows for battery cells.

Who needs a gingerbread house when you can have a graham cracker/candy circuit board?

Ancient Chinese Secrets – Candy As Art

China is the world’s fastest growing economy, and the unfortunate source of problematic food exports lately. But no one can deny this country’s creativity when it comes to candy. Witness, for example, this simple street food vendor, who creates an elaborate fish lollipop (complete with detailed fins) out of sugar syrup. Using his cooking spoon as a brush, the vendor – though I’m more inclined to call him “artist” – pours the image of a carp onto the work surface, which cools the syrup solid. Add a stick and the snack/art piece is good to go.
