Candy Review: Sucre’s Chocolate BonBons

Sucre Chocolate Bonbon Box

Sucre is the kind of shop that I wish I had nearby. It’s a cute shop located in New Orleans that specializes in sweets, mostly of the chocolate variety. Sucre makes a large variety of bonbons, each one looking more tantalizing than the next. They kindly sent me a small sampling, and after opening the box, I didn’t know if I should eat them or just admire them: they’re so pretty!

Sucre’s bonbons are also tiny, so much so that I was reminded of toys and after taking my photos of them, I had an urge to play with them. That would have been a bad idea for several reasons, with the more obvious being that these are carefully crafted and are quite delicate. I had chipped one of the painted decorative tiles in just moving a bonbon from the box. Tucking my playful urges aside, I read the included flavor pamphlet and tried to identify my assortment. I had nine bonbons to decipher from a list of twenty four different types. On with the tasting!

Easter Candy Games: The Chocolate Bunny Test

Chocolate Bunny Test

Easter is almost upon us and that leads many to ask the timeless question: How do you eat your Chocolate Bunny? The folks over at BewaretheCheese.com don’t try and answer the question, but instead offer some humorous insight into your personality based on your preferred starting point for bunny munching. The results are so fun to read I found myself playing it over and over again to see what else the test had to say. It’s worth checking out if you have a couple of minutes to kill.

So how about you? What part of the Chocolate Bunny do you eat first?

Easter Candy Review: Just Born’s Spice Beans

Just Born Jelly Beans Spice Package

The traditional spice beans that you find out during Easter were something I always saw and considered to be a “gross” candy. You know what I mean – the type of candy you’d let sink through the Easter grass to the bottom of your Easter basket so you could “forget” about them until they were inedible and had to be thrown away. For some reason when I think of this specific type of jelly bean, images of Grandma’s, moth balls and dust come to mind, not all things I want to associate with my candy.

These belong on my “never got these as a child” easter candy list, along with Bunny Basket Eggs, Marshmallow Peeps and Cadbury Creme Eggs. But unlike those candies, which I was dying to try because I knew they were popular and desired by everyone, I never heard anyone really crave spice jelly beans. Or the black ones too for that matter. Little did I know what I was missing out on.

Easter Candy Review: 3 Musketeers Orange and Raspberry Minis

3 Musketeers Raspberry Candy

The amount of limited edition candy being released these days seems to be increasing and all the major candy names have jumped on the bandwagon. One of the most recent victims of this is 3 Musketeers with the 3 Musketeers mint variety as well as the strawberry, vanilla and mocha cappuccino flavors that were released in the late last year. Now in 2008 we get three new flavors: Cherry, Raspberry and Orange. I missed the Valentine’s Day cherry release but luckily I caught the Raspberry and Orange varieties.

3 Musketeers seems like the perfect candy bar for limited editions. It’s fairly simple in concept: flavored nougat enrobed in chocolate, and one would imagine that the flavor combinations could be endless. However, looking back on all the varieties they’ve released so far, I’ve felt that something has gone awry. With these two new releases, I was hoping the flavors kinks would finally be worked out.

Easter Candy Review: Hershey’s Kisses Lemon Creme

Hershey's Kisses Lemon Creme Package

I’m always excited to see a new version of Hershey’s Kisses using white chocolate since I’m a huge fan of the stuff. I remember when Hugs first premiered back during my childhood and I was so excited to have white chocolate stripes in Kiss form. I couldn’t wait to try them. Had I known Hershey’s would continue to roll out new flavors of white chocolate Kisses, well, it would have made me one impatient little girl.

I haven’t been as exited about white chocolate Kisses since the Strawberry Creme flavor way back last year. The Orange creme, Candy Corn, Caramel creme, Confetti, Toffee Crunch all left much to be desired and the flavor variety was kinda ho-hum. I have high hopes for these since I’ve had lemon white chocolate before in sundry bonbons and gourmet bars before and it was just a heavenly combination. I was fully confident that Hershey could successfully pull off this simple, yet sophisticated flavor combination in a Kiss quite easily.
