Candy Review: Kinder Surprise Egg

Kinder Surprise Egg

I used to love Cracker Jacks. Actually, let me clarify – I loved the prizes and the peanuts (which were too scarce, if you ask me), but the caramel corn? Not so much. Really, what’s not to love about a sweet treat accompanied by a little surprise?

Imagine my delight, then, when I discovered the Kinder Surprise Egg, a hollow chocolate egg with a surprise in the center! The Kinder Egg, manufactured by Italian confectioner Ferrero, originated in Italy in 1972, and since then the toy prizes have become coveted collectors’ items.

Candy Review: Hershey’s Candy Corn Kisses

Hershey's Limited Edition Kisses - Candy Corn flavor

Editor’s Note: A reader submitted a review of these on the same day Mariko wrote her review so since the reviews were wildly different, I figured we’d post both of them in one just to show that reviews are just opinions and you may not always agree with them.

Mariko’s review:

Ahh, the crispness in the air and the bright, clear sun can only mean one thing – summer is over! I am not a winter lover, but I do love autumn, and one of the main things I love about autumn? Yes, the ultimate Candy Addict holiday – Halloween. It’s only September, but the stores are already gearing up for the holiday of holidays by lining the shelves with Halloween candies. When I saw an ad for the limited edition Hershey’s Kisses in candy corn flavor, I pounced. Hershey’s Kisses and candy corn? What’s not to love! Well, unfortunately, there is plenty not to love.

The Closer: Sweet on Brenda

The_closer.gif
Season 3 of the TNT drama The Closer just began and not a moment too soon for some of us Candy Addicts. The main character of Deputy Chief Brenda Johnson attacks candy and sweets with as much gusto as she attacks her job (which is to say, pretty aggressively). Since Season 1 Brenda has sneaked sweets every chance she gets. The woman is a candy junkie! She hides snacks in her top desk drawer, steals bites of other people’s sweets, and try as she might to resist, she just can’t. The sugar satisfaction she feels after the first bite of a sweet treat is so palpable that I swear it makes my mouth water.

At the beginning of Season 2 Brenda went on a bit of a health food kick and shunned sugar (and forced her staff to eat healthily as well), but after a couple of episodes she was back on sugar. You only live once, Brenda, so why not enjoy it!

Brenda hasn’t indulged in sweets too much just yet in Season 3, but I always look forward to seeing what treats pass her lips! In the meantime, here’s a video montage of Brenda’s sugar lapses throughout the seasons:

Candy Review: Life Savers Fruit Tarts

Life Savers Fruit Tarts
For a long time my official “car candy” was Altoids. I liked the regular flavor, but my husband preferred wintergreen, so we kept two tins on hand (but his disappeared first, since his habit was to crunch through several Altoids at a time!). Oh, but I digress. My current car candy is the tart and lovely Life Savers Fruit Tarts. These come in two varieties: the purple tin contains Grape Berry, Green Apple, and Strawberry Watermelon; the gold tin has Watermelon, Cherry Lemonade, and Mandarin Orange. I usually alternate between the two tins.

The little fruit tarts are sugar-free but not, according to the tin, a “low-calorie food”. Whatever. The tin is very clever and cute. You press down in the center of the lid, and the sides release and pop open. The close, you replace the lid and just pinch the sides, and they snap back into place. Should I confess that I could not for the life of me figure out how to get these tins open? My husband had to show me. In my defense, though, these are car candies, which means I was too busy driving to read the instructions.

Candy Review: Chocolate Covered Potato Chips and Popcorn from Sugar Plum

Sugar Plum chocolates

Ahh, the age old conundrum: sweet vs. savory. I face it every time I go out for breakfast, but I never considered it an issue with candy. After all, candy is and should be sweet, right? Well, leave it to Pennsylvania-based Sugar Plum to mess with my reality. I recently received samples of two products: Chocolate Popcorn and Hand-Dipped Chips in Belgian Chocolate.

Sugar Plum chocolate-dipped potato chips

When I opened the box of chips, I have to confess that I wasn’t particularly excited. Chocolate-dipped potato chips sounded a little fussy and gifty, and I figured neither the chocolate nor the chips would be of very high quality. Well, I was wrong! I took a bite, and I have to say that these chips rocked my world. I cannot even express how delightfully delicious the combination of the salty ruffled chip with the dark chocolate is. The chocolate is smooth and flavorful and perfectly complements the crunchy chip. I had to push the box away from me so that I wouldn’t polish off the entire contents in one sitting. Yes, my friends, these are indeed awesomely addictive.

Sugar Plum chocolate-drizzled popcorn

The Chocolate Popcorn is also pretty darn tasty. Now, it’s well-nigh impossible to mimic the texture and flavor of fresh popcorn, so it’s no surprise that some of the popcorn pieces in Sugar Plum’s Chocolate Popcorn are a tad on the soft and stale side. That did not, however, stop me from enjoying the concoction. There is a healthy drizzling of both dark and milk chocolate on the popcorn, resulting in great little clusters. The only thing lacking was salt (and maybe butter) on the popcorn – I think the addition of some salt would have kicked it up another notch on the delicious scale.

You can buy these and many more delicious treats at Sugar Plum’s website or at igourmet.com.
