It’s that time of year again! The time of year that brings warm fuzzy feelings to every Candy Addict’s heart - Halloween is here! Of course, those of us without offspring of our own are more concerned with the coveted After-Halloween-Candy-Sales or with figuring out how we can make ourselves look 20 years younger and dress up to score our own free candy.
So while the finishing touches on your “No, really, I’m only 8 years old” sign are drying, don’t forget to check out some of our previous Halloween posts, and be sure to have a safe and happy Halloween night!

We all have trick-or-treaters we really don’t want to give candy to. You know the ones - thug teenagers who have no business being out trick-or-treating, parents asking for candy for their third child who happens to be 2 weeks old (”Yes, she eats breast milk, formula, and a few Snickers here and there”), and repeat customers who come back because they know you give out the good stuff. So what to do with these ne’er-do-wells? Give them some candy that sucks, of course! And I found the perfect candidate - crunchy tarantulas.
I found crunchy tarantulas at the same time I got the gummy brains from Oriental Trading. I really truly thought they would be good - marshmallow, gummy, and hard candy bits? What could be better? Well, for one, eating a bar of soap. Or possibly chemically treated wood pellets. Seriously. Nasty. Stuff.

When I went to the Swedish Fish Party a few weeks back, I salvaged the evening by buying a few varieties of Halloween candy I hadn’t tried before. Unfortunately, it was so overpriced I didn’t buy very much, and what I did buy got devoured on the subway on the way home. So, I didn’t get a chance to review any of it. Last week, we were ordering stuff from Oriental Trading for Halloween gift bags when I saw the very gummy brains I had bought at Dylan’s Candy Bar and decided this was my chance to give them a proper review!
The brains are multicolored with blues, oranges, whites and pinks on peach backgrounds. They’re not quite globular, but instead are somewhat squashed. The brainy ridges are the only thing that make these actually resemble brains; luckily, their flavor redeems them.

Our good friends over at Licorice International recently sent me a little licorice care package containing, among other things, a sample of Dutch company Katja’s Apekoppen. Needless to say, I was overjoyed to get the chance to try a new kind of licorice!
Apekoppen, translated as Apeheads, are half brown/half white ape-shaped candies. I briefly skimmed an explanation of the confection and saw that they were actually a melding of banana and licorice flavors - the white part was banana, the black traditional black licorice. I immediately thought they were going to taste, well… disgusting. But, being the brave soul I am, I bravely forged ahead. Happily, I was rewarded with one of the most interesting licorice candies I’ve had in quite some time.

When reading this article, please keep in mind that I am, in point of fact, actually a crotchety old teetotaler in a 27-year old’s body. I hate people, alcohol, and loud music, in that order. It’s a shock I’m still single.
A while back Brian got an invitation to attend a party hosted by Swedish Fish to celebrate their new ad campaign. Since I’m the only staff Addict in New York City, he passed the invite on to me. I asked my friend Jane to go with me, and on Tuesday night I headed into Manhattan to meet her and go together to Dylan’s Candy Bar.
Being the overall moron that I am, I completely forgot to bring a digital camera with me. Duh. They took pictures of us with a giant Swedish Fish as we went up, but I’m telling you now, I will not be sharing them. Ever. Don’t ask. It won’t happen. Jane, however, had a camera phone and she got this image of what turned out to be the most interesting thing of the evening - candy sushi in the flesh! I didn’t try it (sour isn’t my thing) but Jane said it was pretty gross - they didn’t get the memo about using Rice Krispie Treats as the inside and used real rice instead.

A while back I attended the Fancy Food Show here in New York City. Like the All Candy Expo, the Fancy Food Show is only open to people in the food industry (or, in our case, members of the press who write about the food industry). Where the ACE is pretty darn big, the FFS is freaking ENORMOUS! From herbs and spices to olive oil to cheese to candy, pretty much every food group is represented to the extreme. I had the pleasure of meeting with the folks from Hillside Candy to try their GoNaturally Organic Hard Candies. Much to my chagrin, it’s taken me this long to finally find time to sit down and write a proper review of their tasty sweets.
I got six different varieties of hard candy to try, including Honey Lemon, Apple, Honey, Cherry, Pomegranate, and Ginger. So how do these hand-made gluten free candies measure up?

Have you always dreamed of running your own candy company, making all the decisions, guiding the fate of flavors? Well, you still can’t do all that, but you can have a say in the choice of the newest Jelly Belly Jellybean flavor.
Out of over 200,000 flavor suggestions, five have been chosen to vie for public opinion and the chance to make it big as an official Jelly Belly flavor. The five choices are Sublime Chili Lime, Honey, Thai Iced Tea, Mojito, and Acai Berry. You can vote once per day through August 31, so if you see something you’d really like to try, get out there and vote!
A little while ago we came up with some new flavors of our own - check out Candy Addict’s Girly Beans! Somehow none of them managed to make it into the final five… oh well, maybe next time!
For the record, my choice is honey, but I think Acai berry could be interesting as well. Let us know your pick in the comments below!

In our continuing coverage of the ‘08 election (hey, everyone else is covering it, why shouldn’t we?), today we bring you Kai’s Campaign ‘08 Candies. Kai’s makes traditional handmade Japanese rolled candy (kumi ame) in various cute and fun designs. For this election season, they’re offering both Lick Obama and Lick McCain candy sets. I got a chance to try the Obama set, and while I can’t claim the candies set new heights in confectionery deliciousness, I will admit that they’re pretty darn amusing!
The Obama set includes several lollipops with a cartoon Obama face, a bunch of little blue lozenge-shaped hard candies with the Democratic donkey, and similar candies in red, white and blue with the word “Vote.” For now the Obama set also includes a McCain pop, and the website says that they’re redoing the McCain face - in the meantime, only the Obama set is available.
The candies themselves taste fairly typical - the Obama ‘pop is mostly just sweet (the website says it’s lemon-lime flavored), while the lozenges have very slight flavors - lemon-lime for the donkeys and lemon for the vote candies (the lemon-lime of the lozenge tastes different than the lemon-lime of the Obama lollipop). McCain’s ‘pop sports a flavor that seems to be that of burnt sugar, though the website claims it’s strawberry. It’s not totally unpleasant, but I’m not sure I would ever have come up with strawberry if I hadn’t read it.
What’s cool about these is that the images go all the way through the pop, so even after you’ve sucked on them for a while, you can still take it out of your mouth and proudly display it for coworkers or admirers. And while the flavor may not be astounding, they’re certainly good in a general sugary kind of way. But really, we aren’t buying these for their flavors, are we?
