What’s this? Valentine’s Day is past and I still haven’t reviewed any Valentine-type candy? Thank goodness for this big old bowl of assorted Hershey’s Kisses one of my coworkers left on the counter at work. As they say in French… YOINK!
Now, Hugs are kind of the under appreciated younger siblings of Kisses. They may not be as intimate, but that also means you can share them with a lot more people, from your mom to your best friend to that creepy wino who hangs out on the corner of 45th and Main… Oh wait, we’re talking about candy, aren’t we? Well, Hugs (the candy) may not be as well-known as Hershey’s Kisses or come in so many flavor varieties, but I like them all the same.
Wrapped, Hershey’s Hugs are identical to Kisses, except that their little tag says “Hugs” rather than “Kisses,” and the foil is striped. There’s a reason for that. Open the wrapper, and you’ll find that the candy underneath also bears a stylish set of stripes in white and milk chocolate. (How do they do that?)
The handful of Hugs I “yoinked” from the candy dish at work are wrapped up for Valentine’s in red and silver foil, decorated with silver and red pinstripes respectively. Under the wrapper, they appear to be predominately made of white chocolate striped with milk, but they also contain a center of milk chocolate under the coat of white, so it’s probably about a 50-50 ratio of white to milk. The milk chocolate keeps the white chocolate from being too sweet, while the white adds a pleasant milkiness to the familiar, slightly grainy Kisses chocolate. The combination is reminiscent of European milk chocolate, with its higher concentration of milk solids – creamy and rich without ever venturing into too-sweet territory.
So if Kisses bore you, perhaps its time to take another look at their stripey siblings. Because Valentine’s day may be over, but it’s never too late to share a Hug (or a bunch) with someone you love. Awww… now ain’t that sweet?

March 27th, 2009 at 12:06 amMy aunt’s dog once ate all of the hugs that were in a candy dish at my grandma’s (foil and all!). Everyone thought I did it until we had some christmas tinsel in my aunt’s backyard… Still is funny today… And hugs are actually one of my favorite chocolates.
