You neglected to mention the great SHAPE of Thrifty ice cream scoops! They were squarish. And the scoop was like nothing I've ever seen anywhere. And the scoops were like 25 cents each or something amazingly cheap. My favorite was chocolate chip. MMMMMM.

Your comment about "drug store ice-cream" is funny. Many drugstores were originally the local malt shop and quite a few made their own ice cream. From what I know, it was quite an easy step to ice cream since many of them were also soda shops. (Remember: Drinks like Coca Cola was originally proposed as medicinal in nature. So, you can see the connection -- pharmacy, drinks with medicinal qualities made on-site with soda water, soda shop, malt shop, ice cream.)

In New Orleans, K&B Drug Stores held this lineage. One of the earliest memories I have is going to the Lake Forest location which still had its malt stand intact.

Sadly, K&B Drug Stores are long gone with the malt shops going away much earlier.

I don't know how many drug stores still sell ice-cream let alone how many actually make it themselves! ;-)
