I love caramel. Anything dipped in it will do – apples, pretzels, onions… you get the picture. I still crave the old Marathon bar, the one with chocolate, braided caramel and a ruler on the back of the package. I rejoiced when Cadbury came out with a king-sized Caramello bar. At Halloween time, I eat the caramel discs that come with taffy apple kits and toss the apples. (Well, I don’t actually buy the apples, but, again, you get the picture.)
So I’ve been wanting to try Werther’s Original caramel chocolates ever since I saw the commercial on TV. Werther’s candies are marketed as treats handed down through the generations. They’re always showing some older gentleman (I hope it’s that kid’s grandpa) handing out candies to young tykes in short pants. There might be a little vaguely European candy shop where robust workers joyfully toil away on their sweet confections. (“I may be making minimum wage, but this caramel is off the hook!â€) After eating their candy, folks generally hug, smile and live happily ever after. I don’t know if you can get this same feeling from a Twix bar.
But back to the Werther’s. When you unwrap each piece of Werther’s Original Caramel Chocolate Dark, you reveal a caramel-chocolate two-bite masterpiece. Dark chocolate and caramel are swirled together into an elegant oval. The chocolate is 42 percent dark, just bitter enough so that the caramel doesn’t overpower it. The caramel has an almost salty, buttery taste. It’s a perfect combination: not too sweet, not too bitter, almost like a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie.
What’s also nice is that the chocolates aren’t hard but soft. The thin disk immediately warms and melts in your mouth. Mmmm… I feel like hugging someone right now!
Werther’s Original Caramel Chocolate Dark is made by the Storck Company, which makes a variety of oddly-named candies: Riesen, Milkfuls, Toffifay and Mamba to name a few. Although name-challenged, their candies are some of the best on the market. Werther’s Original Caramel Chocolates are available in milk and dark chocolate.
Highly recommended, so put on your short pants, grab a bag and enjoy!

I like the originals and I like the Riesens … and I love caramel and chocolate, so I’m definitely gonna try these. They sound yummy!

November 22nd, 2008 at 8:50 amDon’t waste your time. These are not very good. I like the other werthers carmels but they really missed the boat in this one.
