My local grocery store just began carrying a new fruit candy by Sun-Rype called Squiggles. They profess to be 100% fruit twists – implying that the Squiggles are healthy, not just yummy. To me, something called a “Squiggle” just looked fun so I grabbed a couple.
First up, I tried the strawberry. The moment I opened the package I was hit with a strawberry jam smell that made my mouth start watering. The Squiggle was really sticky, so I decided to keep it partially wrapped in the packaging while I sampled it.
I’ve gotta say the strawberry Squiggle was a huge hit for me. It was slightly tart, just like real strawberries, and bursting with a great, complex, real strawberry flavor. I even liked the texture, which is very firm. I thought it was going to be more like a gummi worm but it’s much firmer than any fruit or gummi candy I’ve had before.
Next, I tried the raspberry citrus Squiggle. Again, it had a great fruity scent and that unexpected firmness that really gave me something chew on. However, I preferred the strawberry. The raspberry citrus had a little too much citrus and not enough raspberry for my taste.
At only 60 calories, these guiltless wonders are a great snack. They taste great and I have to admit that the shape of the Squiggles makes me giggle!
these sound pretty good. hopefully they’ll come out with more flavors. i’d be interested in a real watermelon flavor.
October 21st, 2008 at 12:51 pmThese look very similar to a candy I used to eat regularly as a child. However, I’m not sure what it was called. It was in the fruit snacks aisle and you had to peel the squiggles off little white squares, much like the small trays that hold Reese’s cups. It seems like you got two flavors (strawberry and blue rasberry) in each snack. I think it was made by the same company as Gushers or Fruit by the Foot, but I just can’t remember the name of it. Am I totally making this up or does anyone else remember this candy?
October 22nd, 2008 at 12:31 amAha! I found it! It was called “String Thing.” I was wrong about each snack having two flavors, but I still had the main idea of it. Here’s the old commercial: http://www.retrojunk.com/details_commercial/1028/
Do Squiggles resemble these snacks at all?
October 22nd, 2008 at 1:16 am@ Heather: I remember those string things! They were fun! The Squiggles are about the length of a Twizzler, give or take a bit, and they don’t peel apart like the string things. They also have a very firm consistency and they don’t stick to my teeth like some other fruit snacks. Let me know if you find them and if you like them!
October 22nd, 2008 at 4:03 pm@ amypaige: I keep looking to see if there are more flavors but so far, no luck. The website says its just the strawberry and rasberry citrus so far. But the fruit strips, which I haven’t tried, also have a cherry flavor. I sure would love to try a watermelon flavor!
These were pretty good, but I prefer Archer Farms over it.
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:55 pmHere in Canada they came out with a strawberry watermelon fruit strip not too long ago and I am so addicted to it, easily my favorite flavor ever. They also came out with a strawberry watermelon juice which is alright and none have any added sugar which is a bonus for me.
