Chewy Sprees can do no wrong in my book, but I am a little suspicious of this new Mix’d Berry flavor. None of the flavors are identified on the package, so who knows what could be, you know, mix’d (yeah, the cutesy spelling kind of gets me). The package says, “It’s a kick in the mouth!†What does that mean? Are they going to be sour? Overpowering? What? I guess there is only one way to find out.
I open up the package, and I must say the colors are stunning. Bright and cheerful, these little candies are calling out to me, and it’s all I can do to keep myself from shoving them all into my mouth. There are four flavors in the Mix’d Berry Chewy Spree package: purple, pink, red, and turquoise. Wikipedia claims that the turquoise (okay, so they call it aqua) is blueberry. I am still confused as to whether Mix’d Berry means there is more than one berry flavor per color (you know, like cranberry-raspberry flavor) or if it just means there are four berry flavors in a package. I am not confident I will be able to determine this by tasting them, but I’ll give it a try!
Here is a breakdown of the four flavors/colors, along with my guess as to the flavor simply based on color:
Red: I am guessing the red is some kind of cherry, but wait, cherries aren’t berries, are they? So, maybe the red is raspberry? Let’s taste it and see! Mmmm, it is relatively sour and yummy, but, yeah, sorry, I cannot identify the berry. I’m going to guess it’s some sort of strawberry-cherry flavor.
Pink: I think the pink is probably strawberry, and tasting the pink should maybe give me a better clue as to what flavor the red really is. Here goes! Oh yeah, the pink is definitely strawberry (or artificial candy strawberry, if you want to get technical), so that means the red is something else, like raspberry. Anyway, the Sprees are very flavorful and juicy, if a candy can be juicy.
Turquoise: This is supposedly blueberry, and my guess is that it is blue raspberry, which isn’t really saying much, since that isn’t really a flavor unless you’re ordering a Hawaiian shave ice or a Slurpee, but I swear it is that color. I will now taste and see! I believe this one is indeed blueberry! At first I didn’t think it was as sour as the red and pink, but it had a nice little tang at the finish.
Purple: Purple must be grape, but wait, grapes aren’t berries, either, so what could it be? Huckleberry? Boisenberry? Marionberry? Or blackberry? I’m going to guess blackberry, since that is the most common of the dark purple berries. Okay, so I tasted it, and I may be off, but I am going to guess that this is blackcurrant. I have no idea where that came from, since I am certainly not an expert on blackcurrant, but that’s just what popped into my head. This one was my least favorite of the flavors. It wasn’t as punchy or flavorful or as sour as the others. Still, I wouldn’t pick them out and throw them away or anything.
All in all, the Mix’d Berry Chewy Sprees live up to the Chewy Spree reputation and continue to perform and please! They are sour and flavorful and are pleasingly chewy, with a nice crunchy candy exterior. Next time you’re at the store, keep your eyes peeled for the Mix’d Berry flavor and let us know what you think!

August 27th, 2008 at 7:51 pmBlue was my favorite.
Red was my least favorite.
Pink was OK. It had a light strawberry- cranberry flavor.
Purple was good but not great. It might of been fruit punch or grape.
Blue tasted like an apple- lemon.
Red tasted like a tangerine- watermelon.
Purple tasted like plain grape or watermelon.
