“Yummy, yummy, yummy, I’ve got gummi in my tummy” is going to be my new mantra! I recently had the privilege of tasting the new liquid-filled gummies, Starburst GummiBursts. I’m a big fan of Starburst products, and it’s always nice to see new candies from them, since they are pretty consistently tasty.
The GummiBursts have a very satisfying texture – nice and chewy and gummi. The liquid center is just a teeny viscous dollop and not overpowering or even very noticeable, which could be considered a negative by some. The packaging claims that these Gummi Bursts contain real fruit juice, but the ingredients reveal the only real fruit juice is apple juice from concentrate. The GummiBursts come in four flavors: strawberry, cherry, orange, and lemon. Let’s examine those in more detail!
Cherry: Even though I really like Starburst candies, I have to say that I have been disappointed with their cherry flavors (see the Candy Addict review on Starburst Sour Jellybeans). The cherry flavor tastes very artificial and reminds me of cherry-flavored cough medicine, which in my book is not very delicious. Still, the great texture seduces me, and I can’t stop eating these GummiBursts.
Strawberry: The strawberry flavor is also rather artificial, but the flavor is not as harsh or strong as the cherry. It has a subtle strawberry taste.
Lemon: Again, the lemon flavor is on the subtle side, but it’s nice and reminds me of a lemon drop candy. Yummy! It is not particularly sour.
Orange: The orange flavor is subtle as well. It imparts a nice citrusy flavor.
The flavors in general are not all that robust (except for the cherry, and it’s robust in a bad way!) and I would prefer something more sour with more punch, but really, I can’t fault the GummiBursts that much, because they are still so fun to eat. They have such a nice chewiness to them, and I do like the mini surprise of the liquid center, even though it’s often easy to miss. To solve the individual flavor issues, I generally pop a couple (or perhaps several) into my mouth at once, and the mixing of the different flavors creates a more well-rounded and interesting taste. It’s always good to be innovative!
