I just bought a pack of Lindt Excellence assorted dark chocolate mini squares. The flavours include 55% Cuba, 65% Madagascar, and 75% Ecuador. As expected, the higher the cocoa solid content, the more bitter and chalkier the taste and texture. The Madagascar one was my favourite as I could definitely taste the vanilla flavour of the chocolate and was quite smooth. They all had an acidity to them - as do most chocolate, but I could feel it more with these chocolates. I'm impressed at your highly developed sense of taste. I couldn't taste those spicy notes of the Ecuador chocolate - mainly just the acidity and bitterness. Great review! =)

I also -love- chocolate, in a very deep and visceral, almost carnal manner, and you're totally right about tasting chocolate being different from eating it. It takes a fair amount of discipline, especially if you love chocolate. That said, I think the ultra-thin Lindt squares are a great entry point into chocolate tasting. Even if you're not that into "fancy" single origin chocolate, the size and shape can inspire you to pay closer attention to even a plain ol' chocolate orange square. Remember, don't scarf it; celebrate it!

I have one of these at home right now and I am not sure which one! It's weird though; it's good and all, but it has the same kind of unctuous extra-smoothness and thinness of the chocolate in the Lindt balls. It's good, but it's not normal chocolate!
