Candy Review: Emily’s Milk Chocolate Love Fortune Cookies

I love fortune cookies, if only because they are the closest thing I have left to my beloved and discontinued Fortune Bubble gum. The concept of fortune cookies is both ridiculous and wonderful: it’s a cookie… with a secret inside!

The idea of a dessert with a story to tell always makes me happy, and since my life-long dream of finding a message in a bottle has yet to come true, I’ll take my secret messages where ever I can get them – even if the messages aren’t that great. The last fortune cookie I had was actually blank on one side and had the Chinese pronunciation for “Shoe” on the other.

(I am sure it is a clue to something bigger. Or maybe not. My brain is set on LOST right now.)

In any case, I was extremely happy when a box of Emily’s Milk Chocolate Love Fortune Cookies arrived at my house. The cookies come in a glossy red box, similar to one you’d find at a Chinese restaurant. There are six cookies per box, each individually wrapped – perfect for sharing with those you care about.

The cookies are fresh and light, with a slight vanilla flavor that retains its essence beneath a thin and delicious layer of milk chocolate coating. The cookies are so fresh that they snap perfectly in two, allowing for easy access to the fortune within without making a shattered cookie mess.

The fortunes are sweet, but not overly so. I was worried that I’d find myself in Dove Promises territory, with my candy telling me to smile at the hearts in the wind or some sappy nonsense, but Emily’s fortunes are romantic without being mushy.

They are also not relationship-specific: the messages of love and caring that my co-taster and I received could apply to a number of situations, so these cookies celebrate love and romance in general, without being strictly for couples.

Examples:

Don’t be afraid to tell someone that you care.

“Love is an act of endless forgiveness, a tender look which becomes a habit.” – Peter Ustinov

If these quotes are still a bit too lovey-dovey for you, Emily’s offers a dark-chocolate “friendship” fortune cookie as well.

With a ridiculously fair price of $4.99 per box, these cookies are a unique and tasty way to show someone you care this Valentine’s Day.

Fortunes aside, a well-packaged, well-made, delicious box of candy always delivers the message that whoever receives it is somebody special.

My favorite fortune I’ve ever gotten (and I’ve had lots of fortune cookies in 50 years!) reads: “You will be hungry in an hour; order some take-out now!” It still makes me smile every time I see it; I’ve got it photo-enlarged and on my refrigerator door. I could go for these fortune cookies, especially knowing that the chocolate didn’t make for a mushy cookie…they look REALLY good in that photo, too!

I also tried these and I must say, I was rather disappointed with them. I LOVE fortune cookies so I thought for sure these would be great but they were just so-so. I’m not sure if it’s the cookie or the chocolate that didn’t thrill me, but these weren’t nearly as good as I was hoping for.

I saw a personalized fortune cookie company once, years ago, but I can’t find them now. What a great idea for a wedding but only if you could personalize the messages. Besides anything wrapped in chocolate is delicious.

@julie I love your fortune. I’ll remember that forever. haha

Targee’ was out of the fortune cookies – but I did find the chocolate covered strawberries for my Valentine. :D
I had no idea about the sayings inside a Dove wrapper (as I am not eating much candy these days :( ), sent one with my 7yo in his lunch, and he tells me it said, “Go to your secret place” (and think or some crap) and well, wow – that was interesting to try to explain to him. Heh!
