What you see here is an experiment. I have been toying with the idea of doing some video for the site and I finally did it. I present to you our first ever Candy Addict Video Review. In it I review Gummy Haggis and Gummy Tapeworm from Archie McPhee and Fear Factor Grimy Grubs from Brand New Products, LLC.
Please leave a comment below and give me some feedback on the video. I know it’s not perfect, but it was my first attempt and I think I could get better with practice. Let me know what you think and tell me if it’s a waste of time or if you’d like to see more of these candy videos.
Buy these candies online:
haha. you remind me of my former english teacher…maybe cause you look kinda alike?
December 7th, 2007 at 7:16 amI like the video review…you can really see the product under review, and you can see you actual reaction, which is good. Well, not in this case “I would not recommend eating that.” haha. poor archiemcphee.com, they’re really getting bashed…
I only have one teeny little complaint, which is that the video reviews take like 10 minutes to watch, and i’m sorry, but usually i’m on here when i’m supposed to be doing homework, so i don’t really have time to inconspicuously watch a video for that long. the regular reviews, i can either read totally, or just skim through, which is nice.
I like the idea a lot, and putting up YouTube videos is a great way to get extra traffic for your site.
I highly recommend this for “gross” or “sour” reviews, “fun” candy related clips, and experiments (all done by your staff or guest staff, of course… you don’t want to violate anybody’s copyrights).
Yes it does take a long time to watch, but it can be fun. If you did it with a Hershey’s kiss, it might be kind of boring.
We live in a video age, and a lot of people love YouTubing viral videos (I like doing it). Keep them high quality so we can see details. Make a link on the right side of the screen for “Video Candy Reviews” or “Candy Addict Videos” (“CAV”). You could even do a meet the staff, and have each reviewer do an intro clip (or even some of your ex-reviewers)! :) Of course, some of you may be shy.
It is also nice to finally see the fearless Brian in the gummi-eating flesh!
December 7th, 2007 at 11:28 amExcellent job! I’d love to see more of the videos…my favorite part is your reactions. The candy was a little hard to see…there seemed to be a glare when you were holding them up, not sure if there is a way to fix that.
The video was a little too long for me, but I wasn’t bored watching it.
Great job. :) I hope to see more in the future.
December 7th, 2007 at 4:34 pmI swear, you must be Les Strouds’ twin (of Survivorman fame: http://www.lesstroudonline.com), which is a compliment. You look, act, talk, describe, everything, just like him. Great job and keep up this up, I enjoyed it.
December 7th, 2007 at 6:28 pmOf course, this completely shatters the way I always pictured you: J. Jonah Jameson (with a chocolate cigar, of course!) ;>
December 7th, 2007 at 7:44 pmAlas, living with the archaic and horrific molasses-on-a-cold day speed of dial-up internet service, I’m not able to view this. Dang. I wanted to see Brian get grossed out! Gummy Tapeworm sounds just flat out disgusting, no matter what flavor they assign it (Gummy Haggis in butterscotch didn’t sound all that bad, actually). I’ll just have to go to the coffee joint one of these days and watch this!
December 7th, 2007 at 11:54 pmI’d have to agree with the others that it was a bit too long, but yet informative and entertaining. I really did wish you had spit out the gummy haggis, that would’ve been more entertaining. I say five minutes is probably the max you’d want to go in this day and age of attention deficit disorder media.
December 8th, 2007 at 5:19 amI have to agree with the other commenters that the video was too long, but it was fun to watch. I loved seeing your honest first reactions to the products. Oh, and next time, why not keep a napkin handy? I would not be put off if you were to discreetly dispose of something that tasted nasty.
December 8th, 2007 at 4:43 pmI agree,a little too long.Maybe just one or two reviews at a time?
December 8th, 2007 at 5:11 pmDefinitely do more though!
This is a brilliant idea. Just listening to your review now. I think you’ve done a great job. You remind me a bit of the guy who does the video wine reviews: http://tv.winelibrary.com/ You could set up a wine bucket like this guy and then spit the horrid candy into it.
December 8th, 2007 at 9:18 pmI would like to see more video reviews. One thing i would recommend is maybe some higher quality video if its available. it was hard to see the products. i dont know if it was your camera or youtube compression. other than that i liked it and hope to see more.
December 8th, 2007 at 11:32 pmI really enjoyed the review. There’s something to be said for seeing someone’s initial reaction to something new versus the write-up they would do afterwards. I like how honest you are about everything too. I would watch a million of these! I didn’t mind it being 10 minutes long but I could see how more people would probably watch it if you just did, say, 2 reviews in 5 or 6 minutes. The reactions are key though so you don’t want to cut down the time for that and I liked how you compared them to other gummi products. Maybe just less products reviewed in one sitting. Loved it though! Great job!
December 9th, 2007 at 5:49 pmCracked me up! I very much enjoy your first video review. It hurt my soul to watch you suffer through the haggis. The length didn’t bother me, but I guess the suggestion of doing 1 or 2 reviews per video makes sense. More, more videos!
December 10th, 2007 at 12:59 pmim not sure if that was supposed to be as funny as i found it.
but i guess its always funny when you watch someone embark on something that they have no idea of its taste.
i dont think anything from archy mcphees has real-life application except for the meat wrapping paper and the crazy cat lady action figure which won me and my friend a new friend in a radio personality and free tickets.
December 11th, 2007 at 1:29 amOh, I forgot to add… Butterscotch gummies sound great to me, but not from that company (that haggis looked WAY too thick to be good in any gummy flavor).
December 11th, 2007 at 12:21 pmI love this idea. There’s something about watching the faces people make when tasting something new. And it gets even better when the new thing they’re tasting is gross.
I think video reviews are a brilliant idea~!
December 12th, 2007 at 2:37 pmGummy tapeworms?? X_X That sounds right disgusting.
December 12th, 2007 at 2:44 pmOh hi Brian! Nice to see ya!
