When I lived in CT a few years back, I had a small house near the beach in a very family-oriented neighborhood, with families that had lived there for generations and lemme tell you, Halloween was a BIG deal. The parents went out dressed up with the kids and stood in the street, chatting and sharing beverages, while the kids came to the houses. It was basically a big street party and FUN! My house was popular because I decorated big time and carved about 25 pumpkins and they were all different (no patterns for me and ONLY a sharp knife...a purist, what can I say?). I also handed out some of the "good" candy while dressed to the hilt for the holiday.

So this one year, my second year there, I was handing out candy (good stuff) from a bowl surrounded by dry ice, dressed as a very funky witch, when this one boy, about 12, decided to grab for more candy. Mmmm, no. I always handed it out and dropped it in everyone's bag, making sure I had enough for everyone. He was such a snot and then made some nasty comments about my candy being sucky this year (sucky wasn't the word he used, but it did begin with "s"), that I decided he needed a very special treat, indeed, for being such a joy.

I told him, "Hey, hang on. I've got a really special treat just for you!" and left the doorway. His folks had already yelled at him for being rude and he was laughing, when I returned with his special treat: a can of garbanzo beans. I told him, quite loudly, "Well, since you don't like my candy, here's something special just for you...garbanzo beans...and hey, they're good for you, too!" All the kids laughed and I admit I had fun dropping it quite heavily into his bag. Little sucky boy.

I did stay up later that night to make sure he didn't come back with some eggs or to smash my pumpkins! The following year, I can't tell you how many kids asked me for a can of beans, LOL!

P.S. Go with the Play-Doh, it would've been great to get when I was a kid instead of those sucky dried out popcorn balls! Ugh.

We live at the top of a hill and haven't had a trick-or-treater in the 8 years that we've lived here. Isn't that sad? I guess the kids are all tired out by the time they start nearing our house--so they turn around. BUT...I have candy just in case this is the year. I have full size packs of Starburst ready to go. No way do I want to be remembered for being the house that gave out sucky candy. Remember the house where you got raisins? Or a toothbrush??? The best were always the full size candy bars.

I think that Play-Doh would be cool! I remember trick-or-treating and getting those little mini boxes of raisins! I always enjoyed those, too! What about small bags of healthy trail mix...you know the ones that also include little M&M's or Reeses pieces? That way, the kids can get both candy and healthy stuff all in one! :) Good luck, and let us know what you all decided on! :)

Alyssa ^__^ As much as I loved getting candy for Halloween, I also enjoyed getting random toys too! I remember getting stuff like spider rings, a yoyo and puzzles before. It's fun to get things that stay around a lot longer then candy :P I think the play-doh idea is great! If I was trick or treating age I would so want to visit your house ^___^

The only thing I really remember getting for Halloween that I didn't like, was coupons of some sort for McDonalds food. I have nothing against McDonalds (when they had the teenie beanie babies I ate happy meals for a few weeks :P), just wasn't somewhere I ate at much.

Okay, here's a situation with which some of you can maybe help me out. I am having a hard time this year because, as much as I love candy (I really, really do!), I am averse to the idea of putting even MORE garbage into kids' bodies. I mean, I know Halloween is supposed to be a free pass for kids, right? But the way nutrition is going these days...it's like everyday is turning into Halloween. So my partner suggested we give out little individual Play-Dohs to the kids who come by. My gut reaction was, "WHAT? The kids would be so disappointed! We'd be like the house that gives out PENNIES!" But it is a good alternative to dealing high fructose corn syrup when you think about it. What do you all think (especially those of you who have kids). Would Play-Doh be a hit?

OMG, I LOVE Homestarrunner! StrongBad's emails are hilarious!

I got a giant bag of chocolate mix and a giant bag of Wonka Mix... I just hope 350 pieces of candy are enough to let me steal out my favorites... ;-)

Sera, this cracked me up! I remember trick-or-treating as a kid, and getting bummed out when you hit up a house that gave you a sucky treat! LOL

We live in a pretty secluded area, so we don't give out any candy. A few years ago, though, when we lived elsewhere, we gave out kit kats, reeses peanut butter cups, and m&m's. We made sure that it was candy that we would eat in case we couldn't get rid of it all! LOL ;)
