One of my lucky scores from Brian’s trip to the All Candy Expo was this odd little orange box from IceBreakers. I had no idea what to expect, but I knew it contained the sugar-free sweetener xylitol. After Brian’s bad reaction to xylitol, I’ve volunteered myself to try products containing it.
The box itself is a little larger than a pill box, and bright orange. It was only after I had ripped off the top that I saw the small writing saying “slide open.” Oops. Oh well, easier access for me.
Inside I found a bunch of little orange packets. To be honest, I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to do. From the feel of them, they were probably edible, but I wasn’t positive – the packaging could be a little clearer on that point. Going with my gut feeling, I popped one in my mouth. Just as I expected, the pouch dissolved and released the sweet powder from the inside. Later, as I was trying to get the top back on, I turned the box just so and caught the writing on the bottom in such a way that I was able to read “Place on tongue and let dissolve.” Once again, I feel stupid.
The first thing that came to mind when I tasted the powder was Tang. Now, I know I’m not the only one in this world who has eaten powdered drink mix by the spoonful. Um, I’m not, am I? Well, either way, it’s darn tasty, and this product gives you a similar flavor in a socially acceptable form. The really nice thing about the xylitol is that it adds another dimension to the artificial orange flavor. Instead of just sweet, it’s also refreshing as it creates a cold sensation when it hits your tongue.
In addition to the general yumminess, Pacs include vitamins A, C, E, and zinc. Really, who could go wrong?
Overall, I have to say that I really enjoyed these. I’m not sure if they do anything for your breath, but either way they’re really tasty. They haven’t been released yet, and you can’t even find information on the Hershey’s website (makers of IceBreakers products), but keep your eyes open for these sometime in the near future. If orange isn’t your thing, they’re also releasing a peppermint flavor, which I imagine would be pretty awesome coupled with the cooling sensation of the xylitol.
No, of course you’re not the only one who ate Tang by the spoonful! In fact, just thinking about it is making the “sour” sides of my tongue salivate. I can’t wait to try these based on that little Tang factoid alone! I’ll make sure to slide the top…
October 22nd, 2007 at 11:05 pmhello my name is d and my father brought home 8 packs of these from his work. he works at danicso sweetners and they are the main xylitol suppliers to Icebreakers. i have tried these and they are awesome. the released date is January 1st. this date is subject to change. thank you.
November 9th, 2007 at 7:14 pmjust bought them at target like 15 minutes ago…theyre weird a bit too sweet for me :(, more sour would be great
November 12th, 2007 at 11:23 pmI bought these at Target over the weekend. I wasn’t exactly sure what they were but I love trying different stuff. The fact that they were orange of course was a selling point. I forgot about them until tonight. I opened the pack and wasn’t exactly sure what the heck to do with them. I immediately turned over the box, read the “directions” and popped one on my tongue. Love ‘em! They make your mouth feel cold and fresh. I wouldn’t quite say that they taste like tang but I think they are very yummy…
November 19th, 2007 at 11:27 pmWell i just bought the icebreakers pac in orange flavor at target. It’s funny beacause the fact that they loked like drugs lured me to them. the only bad news is that the orange flavor sucked. im hoping the minty ones will be good. I gave one to my teacher and he thought i was handing him drugs. It als got stuck to the roof of my friends mouth and he said it was snowing on his tounge. i got so many responses from people who’ve tried them.
December 5th, 2007 at 8:35 pmiv been looking for those damn things for so long i guess tommorrow i will check target

do you knwo anywhere else you can bye these???..
also how much do they cost(i forgot to look)???
December 20th, 2007 at 6:58 pmYes these are wierd and cool at the same time. I work at Wal-Mart parttime and found them tonite on the shelf for $1.67 in Brea, Ca off Imperial Highway and Kraemer. I was startled by the “burst” of the CoolMint Flavor pacs. I heard about the controversal idea that people will think that packs of cocaine might be indgested by kids thinking they are these Pacs. I laughed so hard. #1 why are u letting ur drugs lie around for kids to pick up???? #2 Why are do you have drugs???? Drugs are for stupid people!
January 19th, 2008 at 4:04 amThey are taking them off the market now. Stupid police officers can’t tell the difference between real drugs and mints….idiots
January 25th, 2008 at 10:24 amThe candy companies all need to begin using the natural sugar replacement “Stevia”, then and only then would I become a regular customer…I did the research on Equal and other sweetners, they all make you fat!
February 7th, 2008 at 3:39 pm:-P On the back of the orange box it saids place on tounge and let dissolve. :-P Guess u got too excided and didnt read the back of the box lol
April 14th, 2008 at 1:52 amThey still sell them at walmart
April 14th, 2008 at 1:53 amI can’t find these things anywhere! I’ve checked Target a million and they’re not there! Help!
April 28th, 2008 at 7:09 pmThese awesome little pacs are only available on eBay, I think. Search for them there.
June 18th, 2008 at 9:19 amI bought a bunch of these at Target, even drove 10 miles out of the way to get them. Now I can’t find them anywhere. Are they really removed from the market? The orange ones are cool, refreshing, and just what I need when I’m at a boring lecture in a hot and humid classroom.
July 20th, 2008 at 8:57 pmAlas, they have indeed been pulled from the market.
July 20th, 2008 at 9:02 pmTrish; I prefer to stick with the natural stevia replacement called sugar.
OTOH, these Ice Breakers things are pretty good.
October 13th, 2008 at 4:33 amLeave these in a dark place for a couple of months and they will grow some really tasty looking mold…
December 17th, 2008 at 12:32 pmOK. So I just bought some of these on clearance (90% off!) at Kroger. I see what you mean by them looking like a drug pouch. I will have to hide these from the kids. They are kind of cool and taste ok.
January 1st, 2009 at 8:00 pmWhy? WHY?????? They make the greatest thing ever, then take it off the market cuz they’re too stupid to print “ice breakers” or “hey stupid this isnt crack its a MINT!!!!!!” on the mints themselves in edible ink. Fail.
January 22nd, 2011 at 6:20 pmWhy have they taken them off the market, why??? They were so nice!
September 3rd, 2011 at 10:45 pmWHY???
