Experiment gives scientific proof that smaller Reese’s cups are superior

reeses experiment

Armed with an Xacto knife, drinking straws and a protractor, Daniel and friend Jonathan set out to solve one of life’s greatest mysteries: why the smallest Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are tastier than their bigger counterparts.

The two found that the larger the Reese’s cup, the more “unflavorable” it was. As Daniel says on his blog, “I won’t lie, this paradox troubled Jonathan and I for many a year.”

As a result, they stocked up on Reese’s cups of all sizes and approached the conundrum from a scientific perspective, launching “The Great Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Size/Taste Differential Experiment.” After a taste test, dissection, core sample and data gathering, they discovered the secret to miniature Reese’s cups’ superiority. Think you know what it is? Head on over to Daniel’s blog to see if you’re right. You might want to stock up on Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups while you’re at it, so you can do a little taste testing yourself. All in the name of science, of course.

  1. I’m heading out to buy my own supply & taste/test :) I’m usually a more-peanut butter-lover, tho’ Thanks for sharing this experiment!

  2. With all due respect, I’m afraid I must disagree with their findings *completely* I find the Big Cups supremely more tasty than the miniatures… I love all that extra peanut butter!

  3. I totally thought it was two little kids… when I scrolled down & saw the photos of the dudes with big ol’ sideburns I was a little taken aback…

ps- sorry, but NOTHING beats Reese’s Eggs & Pumpkins!

  4. What fun those two obviously had! I had a good laugh and really appreciate their hard work (no mention, however, of frequent taste tests while between steps in the experiment, I mean, c’mon, how can you NOT eat that when it’s right in front of you?!).

I have always loved the little cups and thought it was probably the “more chocolate” ratio…now I know. But I still LOVE the eggs and pumpkins the BEST of all the Reese’s stuff…once again, it’s a texture thing, I swear!

  5. I read the entire post from Daniel’s blog, and I gotta admit, I thought it was pretty cool! Now if only they could come up with a way for the peanut butter to not turn stale after sitting on the store shelf for too long! LOL

There’s another dilema, too..how to eat a Reeses! Do you punch the center of the peanut butter out of the cup and eat that seperate, do you eat around the edges first, or do you just go for the kill and take a bite? I think that it depends on my mood…after all, I don’t think that there is a wrong way to eat a Reeses…or IS there? :)

  6. Sarah ^_^ My brother thinks there is a right way to eat a cupcake! He separates the top from the bottom and eats the bottom first :P

For the mini reeses cups I always eat the top part of chocolate first, then dig out the peanut butter center and finally the chocolate bottom. For the regular size I like to punch out the center and eat that first :D

  7. There are all kinds of miniatures available for Halloween. I’m feeling inspired to do taste tests.

  8. OMG, Philly, I think that we are alike! LOL I, too, punch the center out and eat that first….too much fun! As a matter of fact, I grabbed a bag of peanut butter cups from the store last night ( this post made me crave them), and ate to my little heart’s content! Somebody take these candies away! LOL!
