Fall will soon be upon us and we Candy Addicts know that means all of our favorite seasonal autumn treats will soon be on the shelves. One thing in particular I look forward to is candy corn! It’s one of those candies you either love or hate, and I REALLY love it.
Granted, candy corn can be bought practically year ’round now in the guises of Reindeer Corn, Cupid Corn, Easter Corn, etc. None of them seem the same to me as the traditional fall candy corn though. Maybe I’m a purist, but I like to think of it as something I can only really eat in September/October and one of the many things I look forward to. There are also a lot of strong opinions in regards to who makes the best candy corn, and I’ve always been a strong follower of the Brach’s brand.
Which leads to my extreme excitement when I found out that this year Brach’s has released two new flavors of candy corn: Caramel and Caramel Apple. Oh yum, am I dreaming? I went in search of the two new flavors and found them at my local grocer in the “back to school” aisle. I could barely wait until I got a chance to taste these to see how they measured up to the original!
The caramel corn smells much sweeter than normal candy corn, if you can believe it. Its color is brown bottom, yellow/orange middle and white tip. The flavor is extremely sweet, but it really tastes of caramel with a burnt and milky essence to it. Hard for me to believe that they outdid the original, but they certainly did it here.
I was sort of frightened by the caramel apple, especially after my experience with the Caramel Apple Sugar Babies. These have a brown bottom, red middle and white tip. They’re really quite pretty and I imagine they would look quite attractive in a bowl mixed with some Indian corn. As for the flavor? My expectations were totally blown away! These, thankfully, do not taste of sour jolly ranchers, hurray! They have the same sweet, burnt flavor of the caramel candy corn but have a fresh, apple flavor to them, like a red delicious apple. It’s great because the fruitiness of it balances out the sweetness, and I found myself reaching for these over the caramel version.
I think Brach’s has two real winners here and I think they’re worth a try whether you’re a candy corn fan or not. The flavor is familiar enough for candy corn lovers and different and strong enough to convince all the rest that candy corn is indeed a tasty treat. I hope they continue to make these each autumn season!
I agree! Brachs has the best candy corn. I love it. I was gonna get the new flavor to see but after reading your review I will get them today! I will report back.
September 7th, 2007 at 12:48 pmCan’t wait to hear what you think Stacey! :)
September 7th, 2007 at 1:59 pmI’ll have to look for these, myself.
I thought you might get a kick out of this Brach’s Candy Corn story from The Onion.
September 7th, 2007 at 2:02 pmI’m intrigued by your description of the Apple version. Now I wanna try it!
September 7th, 2007 at 3:18 pmI really like the caramel apple kind. Don’t give up after just one, after awhile they really grow on you and i cant stop eating them!
September 7th, 2007 at 7:39 pmThese are on sale right now at walgreens!
September 7th, 2007 at 10:08 pmit looks real good imma buy some soon
September 9th, 2007 at 12:44 pmOkay, so if you get around to it, will you please buy some either Zachary’s brand or Target house brand candy corn and then do a blind taste test between those (which are both made by Zachary’s, btw) and Brach’s. And then tell me what you think. I am curious to know your opinion.
Obviously, it’s a matter of taste. I definitely don’t hate Brach’s but I think the others are superior.
Like I mention here, big candy corn freak that I am: http://sugarsavvy.net/2006/10/18/title_139/
Enjoy the corn season!
September 11th, 2007 at 1:00 amSera: Whoops, I just went back to the comment section of my candy corn post from last year and noticed that you did, indeed, give me your opinion. Thanks. As I said last fall, Brach’s are much nicer looking than the others and make really good candy corn fangs (when you stick them on your incisors and smile, demonically. You know…
September 11th, 2007 at 1:05 amI still haven’t tried the caramel apple ones – I was holding out for a smaller bag, but I think I’ll bite the bullet and check ‘em out asap.
Joanna, yeah, I was all over your candy corn post! It’s funny, because after you did that article, I did do a taste test, and Brach’s still came out on top for me. I think it’s because I grew up on it. :)
September 11th, 2007 at 9:02 amWell, I just had to go try these after reading about them and am sitting here with a bag of each (hey, 2 for $3 at Walgreen’s and I’m on it)! I like them both, but I REALLY like them together in one bit…much more caramel-y and I like that. I agree that the apple taste is pretty fresh and doesn’t reek of “fake” apple flavor.
And at age 50 (well, a few days before Halloween, but close enough), I still am known for the annual “fang” photos! Now I have two more colors to fang with! Great review…made me want to go try ‘em before I actually found ‘em!
September 12th, 2007 at 2:15 pmI finally got a chance to purchase the caramel apple candy corn. Its awesome. The caramel is great and like Sera stated the apple flavor is really fresh and has a real apple taste(fruitiness). It really balances the whole piece of candy. Yummy! I still have to try the caramel ones.
September 20th, 2007 at 11:47 amI have been seeing these in the stores, just been too chicken to try them. After your review I think I’ll go out tomorrow and get some. Any excuse to buy candy. ;)
October 10th, 2007 at 9:12 pmMy wife and I really like this candy, she found it just before Hallowee… She got me a bag of the actual Milk Maid carmel squares and we split a bag of the caramel candy corn: Yum!!! It’s better than the original type, and I really love that, too.
November 4th, 2007 at 9:59 pmJust as a hungry baby thirsts for milk, the heart thirsts for love.
November 25th, 2007 at 4:17 pmIf you are a candy corn addict and have a Christmas Tree Shop in your area you are in luck they sell different flavors of the stuff all year long. I can’t stand the stuff myself but my boyfriend loves it so he gets different kinds at different times of the year.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:50 pmIam eating the brachs carmel apple candy corn right now at work, and iam addicted! i love the stuff!! even the salesmen love it! its a great treat! and if your not a big candy corn fan (like me) this is quite a delight! ;)
October 18th, 2008 at 11:18 amHas anyone seen the longer rectangular shaped caramels that have apple in them? If so, who makes them and what are they called?
October 20th, 2008 at 6:49 pmBrach’s Candy Corn – BEST CANDY CORN ever. It only seems to be around when it’s Halloween so I get my fix when I can. I’ve tried others but nothing compares to Brach’s Candy Corn.
November 11th, 2008 at 12:45 pmHello, just wanted to tell you, I liked this blog post. It was inspiring. Keep on posting!
