Most sour candies aren’t nearly sour enough for me. I am one of those weird people who will quite happily eat a fresh lemon wedge without flinching. When I happened upon this bag of Zours, which shows two aliens suffering from a serious case of Sour Eye*, I had to give these a try!
The Zours come in four flavors – sour blue raspberry, sour green apple, sour tangerine, and sour watermelon. Without even opening the packet I knew I was going to love these little babies.
A product from the Just Born company (makers of other treasures such as Peeps and Hot Tamales), Zours take almost a week to produce and over 100,000 of them are produced every single day. With that much sour power in one factory and such a rich candy pedigree, these little jelly delights were bound to be good.
I was surprised to see all the Zours appear to be coated in a thin film of sugar – one quick lick and they reveal their bright shade. They’re fairly uniform in shape, looking much like a smaller Hot Tamale and tapered at one end. They have a clear chewy center and maintain their flavor even when you suck away all the color and powder. So many sour candies stop being sour after the first few seconds, but Zours last to the bitter (sour?) end.
- Sour Watermelon: I loved the watermelon – the flavor was not unlike a watermelon jolly rancher and it gave a nice sour kick on the back of the tongue.
- Sour Tangerine: More sweet than “zour,” this one was a bit like Tang right out of the bottle. (Yes, I did eat Tang with spoon. Didn’t you?)
- Sour Green Apple: A disappointment – not very sour, and not very green apple either, but still nice to eat. The color was cute, though.
- Sour Blue Raspberry: A bit chemically in taste but definitely the most sour of the bunch. Not my favorite but it wins points for being blue.
All in all, I’d quite happily reach for a bag of Zours again. For a sour candy, they’re fun to eat, pretty to look at and sour enough to keep me happy. I tried scarfing down a whole handful at once, but I still couldn’t reproduce the Sour Eye the aliens enjoyed. Clearly their sour threshold is lower than mine.
* Sour Eye: the condition upon which one of your eyes will involuntarily twitch and squeeze shut spasmodically in response to eating a super sour candy.

Just reading that review has the sides of my tongue (the “sour” area) salivating! I love sour things and am always the one at the table asking people for their leftover lemon and lime wedges to eat, which generally results in them exclaiming, “Ugh, how can you DO that?!” I love it. I can’t wait to try these! And yes, I did eat Tang “straight,” but preferred to lick my finger and stick it into the jar, foregoing the spoon!
August 31st, 2007 at 3:48 pmI’ve never had sour eye before but even when I think about eating sour candy, under my jaw automatically starts feeling like I just stuck a Warhead in my mouth. Weird huh? It’s probably because I used to eat sour candy by the handful at least until it started frying my tastebuds.

hey, im the same as you, nothing is sour enough for me. i did find something that comes close though. get unsweetened kool aid packs. and lemon or lime juice. mix the kool aid and juice in a glass. some flavors are better than others. and if you want more, sour try key lime or key lemon juice.
