VS.
I can think of worse things to do with my time other than microwave candy, and there have been several times when I’ve wondered what might happen if I were to be by myself with a bag of candy and a kitchen appliance. Lucky for me the guys at U-Starvin have done it for me, experimenting with microwaving all sorts of (mostly edible) things. For us Candy Addicts, they’ve experimented with many kinds of candy – from gummy worms to jelly beans to breath mints.
Not surprisingly, given the high sugar and gelatin components of these candies, most of them melt rather spectacularly into a living, breathing, bubbly mass of molten sugar before giving up in one final, shuddering candy death-sigh. I particularly liked the gummy worms, who go from being lovable sweet creatures into a single giant, frothing, writhing massive gummy anaconda who eats his own tail and then comes to an untimely end. I was glad to see the “scientists” wearing protective gear as each item was taken out of the microwave! It makes me glad we don’t have smell-o-vision, as experience (my own) has proven that melted chocolate usually smells horrible.
A quick Google search led to me to the realization that gummy versus heat experiments are not new – even here on Candy Addict Caitlin wrote about a gummy experiment where sadly, (spoiler alert!) the bear gets it. It seems there is no way for this David and Goliath story to end on a happy note. In the meantime, though, we can laugh at the efforts of the Micro Maniacs as they make their way through the confectionery world, one molten mess at a time. For those impatient ones out there, they even provide a “meltdown” button so you can fast forward to the good (bad?) parts.

I’m with you on the smell-o-vision on this one…we had to burn sugar for an 8th grade chemistry experiment and the smell still haunts me. I can’t even IMAGINE what melted gummy worms smell like. Poor gummy anaconda! What a way to go.
August 24th, 2007 at 8:23 amOn a related noted. While on an all candy diet recently I tried various ways of preparing candy. One thing I hit upon that was very good was a microwaved butterfinger. I think i microwaved a “fun size” (i.e. disappointing size) butterfinger for about 12 or 15 seconds and then ate it with a spoon. Delicioso!
August 24th, 2007 at 10:22 ami have to say that a mars bar (uk) microwaved for 20-25 secs then eaten like above with a tea spoon is delicious i think you should try it!!!!
August 24th, 2007 at 12:12 pmI will never microwave candy I think it will explode. However, has anyone tryed microwaving COLD Chocolate candy tell me what happens.
