Chocoholic Tours

One of the better parts of living in a country (Australia) with the highest chocolate consumption in the world (per capita) is that every day a new boutique chocolate company sprouts up. In Melbourne we are lucky enough to be home to several of these, which means a walk through the center of the City requires a chocolate stop of one sort or another. Thanks to Suzie Wharton (Melbourne’s self-confessed Chocolate expert and author of “Spoil Yourself: A Chocoholic Guide To Melbourne”), the chocolate mysteries and sweet buried treasures of Melbourne’s city are revealed. Her company, Chocoholic Tours, has been leading Melburnians and travelers from far and wide through the little lane ways and romantic corners to some of the best chocolate in Australia.

A visit from family recently prompted me to join Suzie on her “Chocolate and Historical Treats Walk” which not only gave us a great insight into chocolate, but also showcased some of Melbourne’s more European traits. While chocolate was a highlight (eating it, talking about it, smelling it, talking to a chocolatier…and eventually almost getting sick of it) of the tour, all of us really enjoyed Suzie’s casual and off-beat style and her obvious affection not only for chocolate but also for the city at large. The tour showcased a good variety of well-known Australian chocolates as well as some more boutique brands.

The walk was a great way to spend a few glorious cocoa-haze induced hours, and we walked home with big, melted chocolate mustachioed smiles and bags of chocolate for eating later. Next time you find yourself Down Under, pay Suzie a visit (and invite me, I want to go on the other tours she offers!)
