Some of you Candy Addicts may have never heard of Boyer’s Smoothie. It is the lesser known sibling of the popular Mallo Cup, and they’re both still made by the the Boyer Candy Company based in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The booming success of the Mallo Cup back during the 1940s led to the birth of the Smoothie along with its even lesser known counterpart The Peanut Butter Cup. The Smoothie is unlike any other candy cup on the market - it’s smooth peanut butter center is covered with butterscotch coating.
I was lucky to find a package of Smoothies while on vacation in Florida, at the impressive Candy Kitchen. The package is very retro in design with it’s bold orange-red and golden color motif. The illustration is a tad misleading as it depicts the Smoothies as “taller” than what they actually are. The two cups are same size as the Mallo Cup and their color is a yellowish brown and reminds me of the Reeses’ Inside Out Peanut Butter Cups.
The butterscotch exterior is very sweet, smooth, and delicately flavored. The texture is smooth and a tad greasy, with small chopped chunks of peanuts layered in the coating on the top. The peanuts work very well, providing a wonderful salty balance to it. I was surprised by my first bite because you really can’t differentiate the flavor of the interior from the coating at all. The texture is really the only way to tell that the peanut butter is there. I’m disappointed by this, simply because last I checked peanut butter and butterscotch weren’t supposed to taste similar. I’m also surprised because the butterscotch is so delicate here, and peanut butter is usually such an aggressive flavor. Regardless, it’s still a unique and tasty treat and I’d happily buy them again.
As with the Mallo Cup, the Smoothies come with the Boyer cardboard money stubs, so you can save up for prizes no matter which Boyer candy your prefer.

I tried these about two years ago after first trying Reese’s, I was told these were better.
I was lied to, these made me physically sick, actually sick in the toilet they were that bad. Absolutely horrid things.
July 19th, 2007 at 7:21 amI haven’t had one of these in years and used to love them. I wonder if I still would today? Probably, given my love of pretty much all candy! I never paid in-depth attention to its makeup when I was eating them, I just happily ate ‘em, so it was great to read such a detailed article about an old favorite.
