Life Savers Fruit Tarts
For a long time my official “car candy” was Altoids. I liked the regular flavor, but my husband preferred wintergreen, so we kept two tins on hand (but his disappeared first, since his habit was to crunch through several Altoids at a time!). Oh, but I digress. My current car candy is the tart and lovely Life Savers Fruit Tarts. These come in two varieties: the purple tin contains Grape Berry, Green Apple, and Strawberry Watermelon; the gold tin has Watermelon, Cherry Lemonade, and Mandarin Orange. I usually alternate between the two tins.

The little fruit tarts are sugar-free but not, according to the tin, a “low-calorie food”. Whatever. The tin is very clever and cute. You press down in the center of the lid, and the sides release and pop open. The close, you replace the lid and just pinch the sides, and they snap back into place. Should I confess that I could not for the life of me figure out how to get these tins open? My husband had to show me. In my defense, though, these are car candies, which means I was too busy driving to read the instructions.

The candies look just like a traditional Life Saver candy, onlye a little smaller. The coloring is pretty subtle–they are mostly white with little colored specks. I usually grab two at a time and pop them into my mouth. I try to suck them, but I usually end up biting them, since that seems to release more flavor. They aren’t extraordinarily sour, but they have a nice tart edge to them.

From the purple collection:

  • Green Apple: Eaten alone, this flavor has a slightly unpleasant chemical taste. Poison apple, anyone? Maybe it’s because I bit it instead of letting it melt on the tongue. This one tastes fine when paired with another flavor.
  • Grape Berry: This one has a nice sour afterburn and a pretty strong grape flavor.
  • Strawberry Watermelon: Tastes like watermelon! The strawberry flavor is very subtle, perhaps nonexistent, really.

From the gold collection:

  • Watermelon: Okay, I think the green one is supposed to be watermelon, but it doesn’t taste like watermelon. The strawberry watermelon from the purple collection tastes way more like watermelon than this one. Maybe they should call this one “watermelon rind”?
  • Cherry Lemonade: Nice and tart. I can definitely taste both the cherry and lemonade, though honestly, if I didn’t know it was supposed to be cherry lemonade flavor, I would have no clue how to identity this one.
  • Mandarin Orange: This one’s a winner, especially if you like those little orange Jell-O cups with the mandarin oranges in them, because that’s just what it tastes like! The orange flavor is quite intense.

I still don’t have a favorite between the purple tin and the gold tin. Both have wonderful flavors and not-so-great-when-eaten-alone flavors. With the snazzy tin and the tart and tiny flavors, these Life Savers Fruit Tarts are keepers.

I bought one of each of these tins and one of each of the Ice Breakers Sours. Everyone in my house liked the Ice Breakers better, though we kept the life savers tins….

I bought the Watermelon/Cherry Lemonade/Mandarin Orange ones and still find it hard to stop eating them long after they’ve burned my tongue. Yum yum.

I’m addicted to these things and actually prefer the purple collection. I’ve been keeping a tin on my desk at work and they make a great snack. My wife recently saw them on clearance at Target for 48 cents a can and bought me 12 more. I guess I’ll have them for a while. As a note about keeping them in the car though, I left some in my truck for a few weeks during the summer and I think the heat caused them to go bad. They were very chemical tasting and a bit softer than usual. I tossed that can out and don’t suggest keeping them in the car for that reason.

I like to eat two at a time, making sure both are the same flavor. That way, the flavor is doubled and I can taste the actual fruit, like the apple or the grape in the purple tin. They’re pretty addicting especially cuz they’re cute and sweet, but have the perfect touch of sour. As a result, the berry, tarty taste has me eating them nonstop and until I get heartburn, while finding pleasure in describing them in such detail on this peculiar site.

Yep, I’m chiming in my thumbs up for Life Savers Fruit Tarts (but only have had the purple collection). I’m looking for the Gold one now.

Just wondering…. did anyone else get a burned tongue from these? Whooof, I think I pigged down too many in one sitting or something.

I love the Lifesaver Fruit Tart purple tins but can no longer find them in my area. Does anyone in the Knoxville / Oak Ridge area know where I can purchase them? Thanks, Laura
