Wrigley is introducing a new sugar-free to the market called simply “5″. The plan is for a mid to end of July availability (UPDATE: They say it’s August now), but they’re also going to be selling it at a few boutiques in LA, Miami and New York beginning this week. I had these on my candy radar and unexpectedly received a bunch of packs in the mail for an early review. (Have I mentioned how freakin’ awesome it is to get free candy unexpectedly in the mail?)
Wrigley’s 5 gum is squarely aimed at the teen/young adult market with its trendy black envelope packaging. The slogan is “5 is the new black”. They even claim that the package glows under blacklight. Since I just so happen to have an arcade lit with blacklights, I tested it and wasn’t impressed – no secret messages or anything, but all the 5′s on the package “popped” out. The packaging is quite cool though. It’s probably the best gum packaging I have seen lately. It’s slightly smaller than a deck of cards and it reminds me of a cigarette pack – not sure if that is intentional or not.
5 comes in 3 different flavors: Rain (spearmint), Cobalt (peppermint) and Flare (cinnamon). Flare is the only one that tells what the flavor is on the package wrapper – Rain and Cobalt give no clue on the package – maybe that will change though (I hope so). You have to resort to sniffing the package to get a clue. These flavor names aggravate me as much as Gatorade did when they came out with flavors like Rain, Frost, and Fierce. When you have to have a chart to figure out what the flavor might be, you may need to rethink your flavor names. And why do companies think we want to eat/drink/chew something called Rain? But I digress….
Each package contains 15 sticks of foil-wrapped gum standing in 3 columns of 5 sticks each. Each flavor doesn’t pack a wallop of flavor at first chew, but tastes like any other gum I have ever had in these flavors. In fact, after being used to cinnamon gums like Big Red, I was rather disappointed in the initial flavor of Flare.
I took some packs to work and have been chewing this gum for the past week and can say that the flavor it does have lasts a long time. I figured since the initial flavor punch wasn’t super strong that the flavor would subside quickly but it doesn’t. While coding and chomping away on some 5, I can look at the clock an hour after putting the gum in my mouth and the gum still has some good flavor left in it.
So, the packaging is quite cool, the gum is sugar-free, the flavor is pretty good overall, and the flavor lasts a long time. You can’t ask too much more from a gum. My favorite part though? I can offer my friends a “piece of flair Flare” or I can say “I have 15 pieces of flair Flare”. Now where’s my red stapler?
“5″ gum retails for about $1.49 a pack. 5 gum is so new, they don’t even have a website setup for it yet, so for now here is a link to Wrigley’s website and here are the pics I took of my packs for this review.
UPDATE: The 5 Gum website is up now!
UPDATE: I’m adding this because lots of people have asked. I think it’s called “5″ because it’s supposed to stimulate your 5 senses. I think.
Loved the \”Office Space\” references! You said sugar free….So, does it have Aspartame or Sucralose…. or Xylatol or Stevia… or Saccharin or Cyclamate… Glycerol or Maltitol or Sorbitol….Acesulfame potassium or Alitame…. Isomalt or Neotame… Dulcin or Neohesperidine dihydrochalcone…. etc….
If I had to guess, I would say that there is a Phenylketonuria warning on the label and it has aspartame.
RESPONSE: it has Sorbitol, Glycerol, Apartame, and Acesulfame
June 5th, 2007 at 11:20 am–Brian
wow, this is like apocalypse gum!
RESPONSE: And what is apocalypse gum?
June 5th, 2007 at 6:50 pm–brian
Along the lines of not giving flavors obvious names, what’s up with calling it 5?
(Too bad about the smorgasbord of artificial sweeteners.)
June 5th, 2007 at 11:14 pmI’m a candy crazy girl and would love to win the packs of gum!
June 6th, 2007 at 11:05 amThis review does not have enough Flare!
Yeah, I’m with cybele on this one. 5 just seems like a random name they pulled out of a hat or pointed to on a refrigerator with a magnetic poetry kit.
June 6th, 2007 at 7:33 pmHmm I saw this at the store today.
June 6th, 2007 at 10:11 pm:O
Sounds pretty cool.
Well as cool as gum can be.
sounds like some good gum. but sugarless thats just wrong. i like the name of the gum.
June 7th, 2007 at 3:28 pmI’d like to try it, sounds great. I chew gum at work to make me feel happier and stay awake!
Hope I can try it!
June 10th, 2007 at 2:50 amThis is selling in DC CVS stores. It’s good, but still just gum. Ya know?
June 10th, 2007 at 7:25 pmThrowing my name in the hat.
June 10th, 2007 at 8:05 pmI am chewing this gum right now- I got it at Target over the weekend- I live in Minnesota. I LOVE THIS GUM- the flavor really does last over an hour (but not too much longer) but that is way longer than any other gum I’ve chewed. I have only used the Rain so far. It’s very good.
June 11th, 2007 at 3:48 pmI would love to win these if you are still having the contest. Thanks
June 11th, 2007 at 5:19 pmAbandoned on an island, I would need chocolate, coffee, and gum. As I can easily chew through a package a day, this 5 gum sounds like it would be the perfect addition to my stash. Heck, it might even last two if the flavor holds out as long as an hour.
June 12th, 2007 at 1:01 pmI’m chewing a piece of ‘cobalt’ right now and it’s really good. Doesn’t taste sugar free to me. I’ve been chewing it for over an hour. FYI…I’m in Columbus, Ohio and a friend of mine gave me a piece today. It’s available in supermarkets around here. Columbus is a big test market, though.
June 15th, 2007 at 10:56 amHaha, I love how some people think their city is special because it has 5 gum now. It’s been released pretty much everywhere, guys. And AntFan, stop trying to sound smart. You come off as arrogant. Plus, if you really were intelligent, you wouldn’t be flaunting it on the internet. You’d be out trying, but failing, to impress people who care. The question could just have been, “What kind of sweetener is in this gum?” No one wants to read the list of sweeteners you looked up on Wikipedia.
June 15th, 2007 at 11:16 pmI bought 5 today…all 3 flavors….I agree with stimulating all 5 senses, however, after chewing for 5 hours while engrossed in work, this gum still has flavor!
June 19th, 2007 at 3:41 pmP.S. I bought it at CVS drugstore.
I disagree about the flavor names. Rain has green on the package, and what mint flavor is most commonly green? Answer: spearmint. Cobalt has blue on the package, and what mint flavor is most commonly blue? Answer: peppermint. Sure, there are other flavors that use green and blue, but these are the true shades of green and blue. The other flavors like wintergreen, etc. use lighter shades of the colors. It’s very simple, Brian, when you use your common sense. Besides, I applaud Wrigley’s for shifting away from the norm. With all of these common, same-old flavor names, this is quite a nice change.
June 20th, 2007 at 12:52 amto cheese (above): Interesting view, though I disagree completely. IMHO, nobody should have to consult a chart (whether on paper or in their mind) to figure out what flavor it is.
Brian
June 20th, 2007 at 8:35 amThis package is the MOST pristine. The best package design by far. Right down to the little “5″ guy icon, throwing the trash away. They thought of everything. One flaw is that the first piece of gum sticks to the little internal container. The package is soo good though, they should sell refills, to save a little money. I dont mind paying for one package of each, but 50 cents extra (or so) is a little much. I also noticed there was no ingredients listed as mentioned above. One more thing, and probably the most important, the gum ain’t that great. but the package…..hmmm goood!! 5
June 20th, 2007 at 3:51 pmTo Cheese….Hmmmm….Cheesy reply…..with all the flavors out today the green could easily be associated with green apple and the blue…why Raspberry….
June 20th, 2007 at 4:17 pmI would like a pack of free gum please. Ever since i was little i have always liked gum. Basically.. IM ADDICTED!!! =]]]
June 21st, 2007 at 4:23 pmThanx
Wow jus had a stick of “5″ Flare and that cinnamon taste is hott!!! Lasts a very long time nowonder they named it that!!!
June 25th, 2007 at 4:00 pmWow, someone called me last week to ask if I’d review a new TV program. I did. They said they were going to call back to see how I liked the tv show (I hated it). NOT!! What they wanted was all about this 5 gum and the ad for it.
June 25th, 2007 at 6:32 pmGot my hands on some of this earlier today, and was unsurprised that cobalt was spearmint. I can’t say I would have known it was spearmint, but it was no surprise and I’ll bet it would have been my educated guess based on the color.
I’ve been chewing on a piece for probably half an hour now and the flavor is noticably undiminshed compared to a standard pack of Wrigleys. I usually toss Wrigleys after half an hour.
The only thing that’s bugging me is the price. I got mine on sale for $1.00, but it’s usually $1.49. I go through a lot of gum, and while this lasts longer, I’m not sure if I’m willing to pay 50% more than usual for a pretty package.
June 28th, 2007 at 9:33 pmI have had this gum once before and omg this is honestly the greatest tasteing gum you will ever have trust me on this i cant find it very many places but it is the greatest gum ever and oh yeah my favorite number happens to be 5
June 28th, 2007 at 11:24 pmI just bought this gum at Walgreens in Tampa, FL. I went on the Wrigley website because I wondered why in the world they needed another gum brand…I’m trying Rain first and it tastes just like their other spearmint but not as strong – I like it. In fact, it’s lasting so long that I’ll have to discard it so I can brush my teeth and go to bed – it’s 1 a.m. here!
June 29th, 2007 at 1:05 amI saw this gum at the grocery store, and only got it because my friend and I thought the package was neat looking…
June 29th, 2007 at 6:42 amI got all three, and think they are all good :)
The packaging is pretty amazing. It looks like I should have to pass a dress code to chew it, but I don’t. I just have to pay $1.50, which is expensive for gum. I’m pretty sure 5 is Wrigley’s attempt to salvage their plan for a chewing gum nightclub in Chicago.
July 2nd, 2007 at 12:24 amLove the packaging, can’t wait to try a piece!
July 5th, 2007 at 10:16 amLove the package, love the long lasting flavor of the Rain flavor, haven’t tried the other flavors yet.
July 5th, 2007 at 10:17 amI think its called “5″ due to the fact that its 5 calories per piece, because on the clear plastic part over the package it says “35% fewer calories than sugared gum. Calorie content of this size piece has been reduced from 8 to 5 calories.”
July 5th, 2007 at 6:27 pmi love this gum..my favorite number is 5 n when i saw it i just had to buy it..i am obsessed..n i cheese harder then kara
July 5th, 2007 at 8:49 pmI do have to say, I tried each flavor and I’m thoroughly disappointed and even a little disgusted.
Especially with the cinnamon.
As stated, compared to Big Red, it is a big let down.
The spearmint is too over powering. It gives me a stomach ache.
And the peppermint has an odd touch to the flavor. In a bad way.
There are only two things good about this gum:
1) the packaging for obvious reasons
and
2) the lasting flavor. Which doesn’t really matter since it is most unappetizing, to me at least.
Okay. I’m done.
July 6th, 2007 at 12:16 amLOL I have some of the flare. I got it cause the packaging was pretty cool. Needless to say, I have chewed it now (the current piece in my mouth now) for almost 10 hours (give or take the time i took it out to eat. There is still flavor in it. not as strong as before but wow. For 1.50 a pack, heck if i can chew the same old piece all day, it is worth it vs say 5-6 pieces a day. Nice!
July 6th, 2007 at 4:08 amThe package is cool, the taste well is just gum. It taste like the old Big Red but sugarless. Personally I like the Stride Sweet Peppermint flavor.
July 9th, 2007 at 11:36 amI was looking for Stride – The ridiculously long-lasting gum, but the store didn’t have any. So, I picked Flare out since it said it was Cinnamon. As Brian, says it wasn’t real clear what the Green and Blue were, but I figured Blue was Peppermint based on Stride colors/flavors. Also, didn’t know if it was Flare or 5-Flare or Flare 5. A gum with two names.
I also thought the stick size would be the same as Stride (Dentine), but not true. It was regular stick size. So, I popped one in my mouth and immediately thought “Big Red” just repackaged. It does last longer (but not as long as Stride). I can play a whole round of disc golf with one piece of Stride.
I have also been sitting here at the keyboard and been chewing on a piece of Flare for a couple of hours. I usually have to put in two pieces of gum so I don’t chew all of the flavor out and then swallow. I managed to chew the flavor out of one piece and not swallow it but throw it away.
What’s up with the whole 5 and the guy throwing the trash away?
I’ll have to check out the Blacklight aspect.
I noticed the gum doesn’t fall out either. I showed my co-workers by holding up the box upside down and saying “Look bats”. Stride using the “snot glue” to hold their little pieces of gum in their package.
Great references to Office Space. Right before I changed jobs that movie was therapy. (“I’ve got people skills!”)
July 9th, 2007 at 6:03 pmLooks like Wrigley’s is trying to bring a bit of their packaging of the Canadian Excel Extreme into a new line of gum here in the US. The packaging of Excel Extreme is very similar, with one-word names for the flavors (Shock, Fuse, Voltage and Charge) and dominant black coloring. That gum is awesome and I went crazy on it when I visited Vancouver last year. HUGE flavor up front — so much so that it seriously clears out your sinuses for a few minutes.
I just bought a pack of 5 Cobalt yesterday (never having heard of it before) just because the packaging looked so much like Excel Extreme. I was very surprised to see that it was a stick gum. The flavor was strong and did indeed last a long time. I think I’m just not used to a stick gum anymore after years of chewing pellet gum. It seemed like it was just too big to me.
July 11th, 2007 at 11:47 amDid the guys who came up with the packaging for Axe body spray design the “5″ packaging too? If not, do you think Axe could sue?
Check them out side-by-side. Theyr’e very similar.
Good gum though.
Bret
July 12th, 2007 at 9:40 pmActually, it does indicate what the flavors are (it’s noted on the film covering). I don’t recall what the Rain package said specifically, but on the Cobalt, right underneath the name, it states “…A Cooling Peppermint.”
There you have it.
Very good packaging, and the flavor does last quite long. I’ll stick with it until the next “revolutionary” gum comes out.
July 14th, 2007 at 4:09 amThis gum is absolutely phenomenal. haha.
You see, my gum phase started out with Extra, progressed quickly on to Orbit, then got replaced by Stride, and now, I am absolutely in love with Cobalt 5 (because that’s the only one I’ve tasted). Anyway, I can’t wait till 5 hits more grocery stores so I can buy it every week!
But seriously, I thought Stride was long lasting, but 5, it’s crazy! It lasts for AGES! I love it!
July 15th, 2007 at 12:57 amTo comment #39 (GBPackersfan) – I just double-checked and my pack s do not say the flavor. perhaps they changed the overwrap after reading my comments :)
–Brian
July 15th, 2007 at 5:38 pmAccording to Wikipedia, it’s named “5″ because it has been five years since the introduction of Orbit chewing gum.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5_(gum)
PS: I bought/tried the gum from my local CVS store, and it’s decent gum, kind of like Stride. The packaging is what made me want to buy it.
July 15th, 2007 at 7:48 pmi had this gum and its amazing they sell it at my towns 7 11
July 17th, 2007 at 1:58 amalso i baoght it because the packaging it caught my eye and its really cool
July 17th, 2007 at 2:00 amchewing this gum right now. LOVE the package as do my co workers. Flavor is good. I am chewing *RAIN*
Great report! Just found this site and its very cool!
July 17th, 2007 at 2:42 pmI personally haven’t tried the gum myself yet, but my mom did today at work and said it was delicious. However, it’s only gum and I don’t think it’s necessary to have all of the above arguing and bickering. Honestly, think about what you’re getting upset over…
July 17th, 2007 at 5:49 pmFlare 5 cinnamon flavor is good on the hot sensation of the gum, but the cinnamon flavor needs improvement, and need to last longer than it does. They could finally have this market tapped if the follow through on the flavor was there. The packaging is cool though.
July 25th, 2007 at 1:54 pmI grew up on cinnamon trident. However, trident seems to last a much shorter time now and is hard to find. This 5 Flare is an excellent replacement. It lasts a long time. And it stays soft and easy to chew. Occassionally when I was chewing Orbit, I would get a headache. Comparing this gum to big red is unfair. Big Red is a sugar based gum, this is sugar free. I don’t know of another cinnamon sugar free gum that lasts as long as 5, has the same intensity of 5, and stays soft. (OMG, I sound like a freakin’ marketer.)
July 25th, 2007 at 5:26 pmI love this gum. I’ve had flare and rain. I think they have changed the packaging b/c mine had the flavors on the plastic wrap. Also, I found mine at a local yocal BP station in Ridgetop, TN. Didn’t realize Ridgetop was “second wave”.
July 26th, 2007 at 2:42 pmto me cobalt is the best
July 28th, 2007 at 3:35 pmi’ve had rain cobalt and flare
goood gum good gum
Picked this up at the local grocery store here in central Indiana. Price is a little over the top and I too first thought it wasn’t much but I have to admit the flavor last.
I’m not big on sugarless but it seems like it’s hard to get anything but bubble-gum that’s not sugarless.
The packaging is very elegant right down to the embossed finger “grip” on the sliding flap on the back of the package.
I’ve only tried Cobalt but after an initial ho-hum impression I’ll definitely pick up the other flavors.
July 29th, 2007 at 11:55 ami got some of the flare today at the wal-mart. pretty good.
wrote up a blog post and linked to this review…
July 30th, 2007 at 3:57 pmA co-worker bought this gum and gave it to her teenage daughters – she said it make them super hyper. I can’t find anywhere where it’s marketed as “energy” gum, but they swear it works. Anybody else get a buzz from it?
August 1st, 2007 at 10:21 pmI didn’t get a buzz… but, after chewing it for a couple of hours- I had
a very odd sensation on my tongue! I was eating dinner and had the
feeling of novacaine tongue. Anyone else experience this?
Love the packaging. Agree the initial taste is much like Big Red- unimpressive.
August 2nd, 2007 at 2:28 pmIt did last forever. Probably won’t buy again due to the weird tongue thing!!!
Only a CG aficionado would know this is definitly a gum worth chewing. Props to both the Office Space shout out and to this gum for beating the 1 hour mark for flavor! Can’t find another gum that really last that long which is why you chew it in the first place. Rookies beware this gum is not for you, stick with the kids stuff such as BBL, HB or DBL BBL.
August 4th, 2007 at 1:36 amI was just at Harris Teeter looking to buy my 17-stick pack of Spearmint gum but instead came across Rain. It was just $1.19 a pack and I had some spare change plus a dollar bill so I decided why not. Tastes delicious. I love the packaging too. It’s that kind of packaging that when people are like “You have some gum” and you pull it out it makes you feel like James Bond with a new gadget :) lol
August 4th, 2007 at 7:22 pmI picked up at pack of Rain on Thursday. I love the packaging even though I am NOT in their target group (I’m 47).
The spearmint flavor is somewhat mild. It’s a very chewy gum, if anyone understands that. Also, I noticed a herb flavor on my tongue after I popped a bubble (HAHA) – thyme, I think.
August 5th, 2007 at 9:24 ami belive its called 5 because the 5 calories
August 6th, 2007 at 12:31 amI’m still waiting for them to release a fruit flavor based on Juicy Fruit. Name it Fruit Salad.
The flavor of Rain (got today at 7-11 in Bethesda, Maryland) has lasted for over 2 hours. Not bad at all!
August 8th, 2007 at 1:06 pmTried it today. Seems like it will be a winner.
August 10th, 2007 at 9:44 amCobalt Gum is a complete joke. I purchased the gum thinking it would be something more than a few pieces of winterfresh sticks wrapped in fancy packaging. If I were Wrigley I would be laughing my whole way to the bank. It’s $1.25 a pack or more and you get 15 sticks of winterfresh gum wrapped in pretty foil to trick you into thinking you are getting a premium product. I will NEVER buy a wrigley product again. I prefer Cadbury’s Dentyne Ice peppermint any day of the week or Trident White.
August 14th, 2007 at 6:15 pmAny gum that lasts an hour without losing flavor has GOT to have something in it that causes cancer. Cool package, though.
-Wop
August 15th, 2007 at 2:27 pmHi! I just saw a t.v. ad for 5: “cinnamon that warms as you chew.” I’m curious what catalyst is added to the phenylketonurics for the warming sensation.
August 15th, 2007 at 8:45 pmBut, I’m looking forward to trying it, as it seems I can’t find a cinnamon gum that’s HOT (like Atomic Fireball hot, if I should ever be so lucky.)
My faves are Wrigley’s Orbit White Bubblemint, & Altoids Cinnamon Gum.
Heidi ;o)
I would like to get more of the “5″ gum I was given a stick and I love the taste and longivity of the Rain flavor. Please let me know where and when it will be available on the market.
Thanks
Bill Boone
August 17th, 2007 at 9:33 amI have jsut tried flare. It has a good taste however it is priced way to high! The package is nice but not worth the price. Try again!
August 21st, 2007 at 11:16 amthis gum i sawsome im chewing it right now …. go buy it!!
August 21st, 2007 at 2:08 pmCan you provide an image of the box under the black light? :)
August 21st, 2007 at 10:08 pmI have not tried Wrigley’s 5 gum yet because I have not seen any in my area. I like Dentine Ice but they keep changing the flavor so it’s not as strong as it used to be. I like the colour blue so I would appreciate it if you would sent me a sample of 5 gum in blue.
J. Jones
August 24th, 2007 at 11:14 amHmm..sounds good, but it isn’t available in Europe. Can’t find an online retailer too…:(
Really wanna try this Gum..
August 26th, 2007 at 10:27 amwow it looks good but i cant find it any were omg i live in staten isalnd new i cant find anything lol
August 28th, 2007 at 6:37 pmI bought 5 because the packaging caught my eye and because it had 15 pieces in it. I chose the flare flavor. I normally buy “Big Red” and have to say for a sugarless version, I am very impressed.
I love that my kids can pull one piece out and all the rest stay in place.
I had it for over an hour, there was still flavor and the gum remained soft. Awesome Product!!!
September 6th, 2007 at 11:34 amA little disappointed, just had some today…not the kicking and refreshing gum i thhought it would be. Didn’t think this gum was going to be like the rest of them, oh well i guess.
September 6th, 2007 at 8:47 pmI bought and tried the Wrigleys Cobalt 5. I thought it was great! The flavor lasts a long time, not like other gums, where you lose the flavor in a the first couple of minutes. I will definately buy this gum again!
September 7th, 2007 at 2:50 pmI was looking at the box, i went with “Rain” btw.. and its even got a recycling number of 5.. meaning A they put quite a bit of effort into there slogan.. and B you can accually recycle a gum package.. 1st? i do believe so..
September 8th, 2007 at 8:19 pmya and besides the ghetto black light glowing package the gum isnt worth it.. its 15 pieces of average flovored gum with a ghetto name for about two to four times the price of any other foil wrapped gum.. im prettymuch guessing there gonna have a huge opening with the gum sales then its gonna crap the bed cause every1s gonna catch on to there little scam.. othwise thell have to lower their gum prices.. so u may wanna get ur ghetto little recyclable gum package before its too late.. ( did any1 elses gum seem stale at the begging even tho it was from a brand new box still plastic wrapped and sealed?)
Yes, I would love to try the new gum spearmint and cinnamon are my favorites. that would be great if you have any left. thanks alot!!!!
September 9th, 2007 at 11:42 pmOkay… I understand that this gum has to have something good inside it… but why are half of you buying the gum because of the pretty package? You are so like flies attracted to a freaking light bulb. I will try the gum for its taste, not the package!
Jason
September 10th, 2007 at 12:04 amThis gum is off the hook. The flavor lasts for dayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyysssssssss
September 11th, 2007 at 6:19 pmi still got the flavor in my mouth and its been been 3 weeks
September 11th, 2007 at 6:21 pmThere were some comments above about how the color of the packages should make it obvious of it’s flavor. I agree, but that isn’t the case with Stride Gum. I was disappointed to discover that the dark blue package was wintermint, not the obvious peppermint! Getting back to 5, I’ve always liked cinnamon gum, so I tried the Flare flavor. I don’t care for it’s taste although it lasts a long time. What’s with cinnamon gum nowadays anyway? There seems to be other odd spices added, not just straight cinnamon…as in red hot flavor cinnamon. I miss original Dentyne cinnamon gum.
September 12th, 2007 at 11:50 amOk- so the 5 people gave me a sample of this gum (cobalt) a while back at walmart. I loved it! Now that it is avaliable in stores it is pretty much all i chew. I especially like the Cobalt but the other 2 are good too. The packaging ROCKS!! I am in high school and this is “the gum” right now. It is VERY VERY popular and i havent heard anyone dislike it. My ONLY complaint is the price of 1.50 because i chew alot of gum. Overall its well worth it i think :)
September 13th, 2007 at 4:12 pma lot of hype over the packageing its a box get over it, flavor weak, the pieces contry to the comment above do fall out of the package. the package should contain a flavor discription, contry to those people who think the color should be a give away. most people dont want to buy some thing the have to guess what its goning to taste like. if you have money to throw away great, but not all of us do.
September 17th, 2007 at 8:08 pmIt’s called 5 because it has 5 calories. If you look at the back of the plastic (not on the box itself :/) it states that it has 35% less calories. It was reduced from 8 to 5.
I loved the Office Space Reference! So Clever :)
September 20th, 2007 at 11:32 pmthe commercials say stimulate your senses but its just gum so how exactly am i supposed to be stimulated?
September 22nd, 2007 at 2:41 amOh sweet I love this stuff and its so amazing
September 23rd, 2007 at 8:51 pmthe gum is called “5″ as it is a reference to the 5 senses, the gum warms (flare), tigles (rain), and cools (cobalt) as you chew it. The question is, what kind of chemicals are they putting in the gum to make that happen? Am i going to wake up after 10 years of chewing this gum with esophogeal cancer because they though it would be cool if it tigled? I can’t think of any other products (other than condoms, which arguably you dont eat) that use those kinds of chemicals, so what kind of testing has been done in terms of their effect?
September 25th, 2007 at 4:31 pmI saw the commercial and thought that it was a commercial for cigarettes, then they flashed the packs and i thought they were packs of cigarettes.
Being im not the only one who thought this, id say it was intentional that the pack of gum looks like a pack of cigarettes.
September 26th, 2007 at 9:24 pmi just bought a pack of the rain at walmart, i had to. a kid gave me a piece at school. personally, i love it. i do like how the package is. because it keeps them in order. and its easier to get out.
September 27th, 2007 at 1:10 amThe packaging is great it looks very upscale. The gum isn’t bad although I’ve only tried Rain because spearmint is my favorite flavor. On a scale of 1-10 I’ll give it a 5. I always go back to Trident spearmint. To me no other gum keeps it’s flavor longer.
September 29th, 2007 at 9:43 amI was enticed into buying two boxes via a demonstration at Costco. Got green and blue.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:46 pmGood stuff but honestly, gum is gum is gum for the most part. This is good but nothing new. The packaging is the new part. Nicely done.
wow, had such high hopes for this come, packaging is pretty nifty (yes, I say nifty), and the name “Flare” made me think it would pack a punch. However, upon putting it in my mouth, I have to say this is probably the weakest cinnamon flavor I’ve ever had. Yes, the flavor lasts awhile, and every so often I get a burning flash on my tongue, but really, there is very little flavor at all. Guess I’m sticking to Dentyne Fire for my gum.
October 12th, 2007 at 5:31 pmI saw the black sleek package, resembling a pack of expensive cigarettes. Something new called, Flare. I could not resist it!
Unfortunately, it tasted more like watered down Big Red and what flavor it did have, did not last long. Keep the ultra-cool packaging but do consumers a favor and call it, Smoldering Match Stick.

October 30th, 2007 at 10:54 amWHERE DO I BUY IT WHAT STORES HAVE IT!?!!?!?!? I NEED TO KNOW 0.0
October 30th, 2007 at 2:29 pmI’ve had only the Flare, but I enjoyed it well enough. At least in my opinion it lives up to its claim to be a warming cinnamon gum. The flavor was not all that different from that of other cinnamon gums, but as others have said it lasts A LONG TIME! A big plus for me. Another interesting sidebar: cinnamon has been lauded in various health sources as being an aide in sensitizing the body to insulin. This plus the fact that Flare is sugar free may make it a great idea for diabetics. I’m not sure if I will become a regular “5″ chewer, (I still want to try Cobalt and Rain) but I’m impressed so far. I just wish the price were a bit lower.
October 31st, 2007 at 10:44 pmI was looking for a long-lasting gum that I could use to stimulate my mouth while I try to quit smoking (the nicotine gum is great for the nic fits, but it has a very short-lasting flavor), and I bought the 5 Rain specifically because the pack reminded me of a cigarette pack. I like the way it opens and the way it feels in my pocket.
The flavor does really last a while, and it has been very helpful in my struggle to quit. I’m a bit concerned about the artificial sweeteners, though. Anyone know of a long-lasting gum that is not so tweaked out on the artificial stuff? Are there any long-term side effects to chewing this artificial crap? Yeah, it’s ironic that I’m so interested in my health now, after years of smoking freakin’ cigarettes, ain’t it? Whatever. I haven’t tried 5 Flare or Cobalt yet, but I probably will. – K
November 5th, 2007 at 2:17 pmIT was good gum. IT WAS HOT. I got 3 packs of gum.
November 23rd, 2007 at 12:32 ami have a piece of Rain in my mouth, and i think it’s pretty amazing. It tastes realllllyyyy good. My new favorite, i’ve been chewing it for about an hour, still good :] way better then like juicy fruit, their flavor lasts for like five minutes..if you’re lucky. Plus, the packaging is sweet.
it’s even better cause i stole a pack out of my sister mwahahaha, she got it at wal*mart since that seems to mean something, where you got it that is.
December 1st, 2007 at 6:53 pmi am chewing away at a pack o rain as i type this and its realy good im working on my second piece (first one still had flavor after a 15 minute ride home and a hour here at home but i spit it out to eat dinner) one of my friends gave me a pack as payment for making them a cd… i gotta say that i had no idea that it was by wrigly because wrigly has always had the traditional packages and they said there name right out of thier packages this is a realy unique way of packaging this gum because nobody (expet stride) that i have found pacages thier gum like this and i have absolutely never seen stick gum pagaged like this… im a big guy on strong packages cause i keep it in my pockets and if i sit wrong then it squishes the package… so of corse i tested the package and i am glad to say that it is rather strong it held up without a scratch under my printer so then i put it under my monitor (its a big fat one not one of the new real skiny monitors) i set the package so that an edge was right in the middle of the package where there was only 1 piece left and i am glad to say that it only made a small dent about half a cm if that… verry strong package! this is my kind of gum!
December 3rd, 2007 at 6:38 pmlol also i dont see what the big deal is about every1 saying its so new… its not verry new herei n missouri… potosi walmart has had it out for like 2 months and every1 here has tried it or seen the package… exept me of corse i had seen the package but i always chewed my stride… even tho i did thin the 5 packages were so awesome… but then today my friend gave me a pack for making her a cd and i love it my new fave!
December 3rd, 2007 at 11:38 pmMann these are awesome I love them!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My secret?? (dont tell!) pop one of each in your mouth at once. I did that and I’ve been chewing it for almost a week straight! Of course i take it out when i eat and sleep, I just stick it on the edge of my water glass, then when I put it back in it has just as much flavor! AWESOMEE!! They should make a flavor that tastes just like v8 veggie juice cause i’d chew that kind FOREVER.
December 11th, 2007 at 10:48 pmThis gum is awesome. It’s flavor lasts at least an hour plus more!
They call it 5 Gum because it satisfys all 5 of your senses.
This is awesome gum and i will buy more :D
January 1st, 2008 at 9:12 pmCan I safely chew the wrap paper?
January 2nd, 2008 at 1:29 amI figured it was called 5, because it’s only 5 calories per stick.. if you read the outer plastic wrapper (which does note the flavor) it states that they’ve reduced the calorie count to 5 per stick..
January 4th, 2008 at 3:56 pmThis gum series offers fancy and attractive packaging, but delivers typical flavors and ho hum chewing. Orbit is my pick.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:20 pmOMG I LOVE 5 GUM!!!!!!!!! even though we get detention for chewing gum at school i can’t stop!! 5 is the best gum that i have ever tasted! i used to chew stride but compared to the long lasting completly deliousious(cant spell) flavor of 5, stride doesnt even stand up!!
cant wait for more flavors!!!!!!!
January 15th, 2008 at 12:50 amIluv da new gum 5
February 1st, 2008 at 8:58 pmI was pretty stoked about this gum for a while, after I continuously saw it advertised all over my computer game websites I visit. A friend of mine brought a pack over of the rain flavored gum, so I tried it and loved it. Two days later I woke up with a HUGE rash on both sides of my upper body. I dont know if anybody else has experienced this after trying the gum and also I am not blamming my condition entirely on this product but its the only new product I have engested lately. I am curious if anyone else has broken out with a rash, its too bad if it was caused by the gum because I really enjoyed, it plus its good for gaming.
February 14th, 2008 at 4:41 pmI like the gum. I bought it bc of the packaging and was presently surprised. The flavor lasts a long time although I still seem to toss it after about a half hour….maybe thats just a weird habit of mine or bc I get sick of the burning sensation on my tounge? I would buy it again though.
February 26th, 2008 at 2:08 pmthis gum last way longer then stride gum, iv chewed 5 gum and could still taste it 3 hours later
March 1st, 2008 at 11:58 amour A&P store in the Toronto area just got 5 and Stride gum (Feb 2008.) I hadn’t chewed gum in years but the 5 pack made me want it so I tried some Rain, which impressed me so much I had to try a bunch of different kinds of gum and the 5Rain is definitely my favourite. Cobalt is very refreshing. We don’t have Fire yet. The packs say spearmint and peppermint on the plastic wrap but not the cardboard. I was annoyed by the sticking of the first piece to the lining and impressed with the little 5 trashman, like an earlier comment said. Quite unimpressed with Spearmint Stride, which I tried after the Rain. ExcelFuse Melon Mint is nice. 5 seems like a good deal to me since in my store it is only 5 or 10 cents more than the gums like Excel and Ice but lasts longer, tastes better to me, and comes in better packaging with more pieces inside. Because of 5 I’ve developed a new habit and actually taken the time to read about this product I wouldn’t expect to care about and then submit my own comments. I guess that’s a positive review.
March 13th, 2008 at 6:42 amI just went to the corner store to get a pack of Stride and saw this new “5″ stuff. I figured what the heck and bought it. Currently I’m chewing a piece of Rain and I’m already addicted. As you mention in your review the packaging doesn’t say much about the product…actually nothing really. So I Googled it to see what came up. I clicked on your review and found it to be quite impressive! Thanks for providing such great info :)
March 26th, 2008 at 4:52 pmRain is the only flavor I can’t stand. Colbalt is the best,, and Flare is good, too- but Rain is just plain disgusting.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:30 pmthis is awsome, and i’m chewing Cobalt right now. It is the best gum ever. Oh yeah, they have a website and it says that is stimulates the 5 senses, so they called it 5 gum. yup.
April 20th, 2008 at 5:15 pmthey are coming out with a new kind this summer, its lush(citrucy) and rasberry i think, i had it in school its really good
April 25th, 2008 at 4:54 pmi l u v your new brand! yellow is addiction! i cant stop chewing this gum, it is just so nice and i swear i would marry it if i could. please, make more types of gum, i love it so much.
April 27th, 2008 at 5:08 pmThis gum is awesome, my family loves it, I understand the reasoning in the name, but my family has named it “penthouse gum” I love the pkg…hate the name…I seriously think they should rename it “Penthouse”..
May 2nd, 2008 at 12:29 amMaybe they are looking to make 5 flavors of 5 gum. To lazy to finish the job?!
May 18th, 2008 at 11:32 amThere are two new flavors that are coming out. one is called Lush and the other one I cant remember for sure. I know they come out this summer. because I order for our store and we got a prebook offer today for them.
I think the packaing is obvious, the Green is Wintergreen and the blue is spearmint.Red is Cinn.
May 20th, 2008 at 5:13 pmits kinda like with certs, lifesavers etc.
the two new flavors are “Lush”, which is a citrus, and “Elixer” which is mixed berry.
June 13th, 2008 at 5:57 pmJess you are so right. i am addicted to 5 gum and i can go through 1 1/2 packs in one day
June 25th, 2008 at 1:22 pmI am chewing 5 gum right now, it is called Elixir, a bery flavor that wasn’t reviewed above. It tastes really good, after chewing it a little while, tastes kind of like cherry. I got them at CVS 3 boxes for the price of two.
June 26th, 2008 at 7:42 pmAsu, q bravos estos chicles, soy hincha del COBALT, dan la recontra hora… saludos desde perusalem! El Perucho.
July 3rd, 2008 at 2:37 pmThey call it 5 because they have 5 flavors (right now only in new york and la they have 5) the 2 new flavors are lush (tropical) and elixir which is berry. they are supposed to appeal to the scences.
July 10th, 2008 at 10:33 pmIt’s 5 bc you can chew for 5 days and still have flavor (not counting overnight). Believe me, I know, I chewed the same piece of gum for 5 consecutive days and there is still flavor – curiously, it regains flavor overnight. Best damn gum I ever chewed!
July 22nd, 2008 at 3:57 pmhey love the gum sugar free the best i’ve ever had and it dont hurt the teeth and the gum is good for when someone knocks the wind out of you

October 29th, 2008 at 1:51 pmMe and my friends all love 5 gum and think it is great. The flavors are great and they last for a very long time. This is some of the best gum I have ever had.
November 13th, 2008 at 8:47 pmSo does it have any negative reaction such as making you not able to sleep or making you act like your on drugs?
November 14th, 2008 at 8:29 amwill you review the two new flavors? they are tropical and berry flavored
November 19th, 2008 at 8:46 pmThis is the best gum ever!! It’s all I ever chew, and I will continue trying every flavor they come out with!
December 9th, 2008 at 2:52 pmI usually chew cobalt all day long,
December 24th, 2008 at 3:36 pmonce the flavor runs out from
1 stick I pop in another…
results headaches, bad ones
I know it is great…but look at the sweetner “phenylalanine” = asparatame !!! It will feed your cancer real well and give you those nice headaches !!!
January 4th, 2009 at 6:30 pmactually, phenylalanine is an amino acid (found in things like breast milk). it’s a component of aspartame, but that’s like saying water is celery since there is so much water in celery.
January 4th, 2009 at 10:09 pmThey call it 5 because it is supposed to awaken your 5 senses.
January 6th, 2009 at 6:49 pmI haven’t tried it yet but after hearing so many positive comments on it I am ready to go out and buy all five!
January 11th, 2009 at 6:57 pmI love 5 gum especially the new Elexir. I think thats how its spelled.

January 22nd, 2009 at 7:29 pmwen i eat it i start to shake ang i have a firey orgasm. its so gOOOOd,
February 13th, 2009 at 4:43 pmAfter about two and a half hours it turns to mush in your mouth it is horrible! it tastes like orange peals but in mush!! but that is only with LUSH the others ast fine
March 23rd, 2009 at 6:17 pmthe best outta all the flavors would probaly be solstice or zing. cobalt isn’t that good compared to solstice
June 16th, 2009 at 10:42 pmlove it…… preety good but sticking with nornal wrileys
August 4th, 2009 at 2:59 ami was hoping it would stimulate my 6th sense =)
im still wondering what is so special about this gum since it just seems to be gum with aspartame in it. dont other gums use that? how does that make it more special, more able to stimulate your senses, than other gums?
