I first found out about this candy from my 5-year old daughter. She got a small pack of them with a Lunchables. Being the great daughter of a Candy Addict that she is, she saved the wrapper to show me. It looked intriguing – three levels of sour plus a sweet blue raspberry “extinguisher” candy to “extinguish the sour”. Unfortunately, she had eaten them all so I couldn’t try any. Well, truthfully, she didn’t eat them all – she told me she threw away the yellows and greens because they were too sour for her. She didn’t understand the “extinguisher concept. I would teach her.
A few minutes of searching online and I discovered Sour Extinguisher was a new candy from a small manufacturer called big BOING and that they had signed an exclusive distribution agreement with Lunchables and 7-11. A few emails to the company and I had some samples on the way.
The candies themselves have a bumpy, crunchy outer coating and the inside reminds me of a softer chewy SweetTart. The varying levels of sour start with orange (Tangy Tangerine), yellow (Super Sour lemon), and green (Tongue Twisting Lime). The idea is you pop in a sour candy and if it’s too sour for you, you eat one of the sweet blue raspberry extinguisher candies and it negates the sour. Pretty cool idea and it mostly works. It doesn’t totally rid your mouth of the sour, but it does lessen it.
Even the highest sour level (the green ones) weren’t too sour for me (but I’m a hardened Candy Addict, you know), but as I said earlier, my daughter couldn’t handle the top 2 sour levels. One note – the greens were tolerable, except for one green one – it tasted like it was full of salt or something. I’m not sure if it was a fluke or what, but it was nasty.
These things are an easy eat too – I ended up devouring the whole bag while writing this review. I don’t think most adults will like this candy as much as I did, but I bet almost every kid that tries them will love them. Drop by a 7-11 near you and check them out.
I picked them up at 7-11 last week. They were, what I call a “great one-time treat.” I tried it, I liked it okay, and now that it is over I probably won’t try it again. I like sour things, but I don’t crave them. They are just a fun once-in-a-while thing.

May 10th, 2007 at 1:27 pmThis is by far the best sour candy i’ve ever eaten, and I’ve tried almost all of them. You should definitely leave it in your mouth at first to get the real great sour experience. The extinguisher is a nice, sweet complement to the other pieces, its definitely a must try for candy lovers everywhere!
June 21st, 2007 at 3:28 pmI just got a box of the citrus extinguishers from the Shell station next door. They’re round, not bumpy and they’re not very sour. The yellow is actually more sour than the green which is supposed to be most sour. Did I get a fluke not sour box?
February 9th, 2009 at 4:45 pmThey also had a sour fruit box at the store. Worth trying?
I have looked everywhere for this candy and I can not find it anywhere!! I have been looking on line to try and order it, but can’t find a place on line that sells it!! Please help, my child is driving me crazy! Lol
