Easter Candy Review: Butter Krak Eggs

The Butter Krak egg, made by Philadelphia based S. Zitner Company, has long been a mainstay of my region. I live only a short drive across the Delaware in New Jersey, and every year, I always hear about people going crazy for Zitners eggs. I’ve never tried them until now, when I ran across them a few days ago.

The Butter Krak, which is made exclusively by Zitners and comes in many sizes from 1.25 oz. to 1 pound and was invented in the 1930s. It’ss filled with a mixture of coconut and butter cream, and coated in both coconut and dark chocolate.

How’s it taste? Honestly, I didn’t like it. I have never been a fan of coconut, though I do like butter cream. The filling in these candies seemed very dry, and was very thick and chewy. Perhaps it’s my dislike of coconut clouding my judgement, but I honestly don’t know why people love these so much. The plain butter cream variety, however, was very delicious and I would recommend that fully.

Unfortunately, the origin of the name Krak has been lost to time, but there are certainly plenty of jokes and puns ready to be made, and I will leave those up to you, fellow Candy Addicts.

You might want to look into Hometown Candy before you link to them next time. They don’t have a great track record with their customers. (That said, I’d still like to try this Butter Krak, it sounds right up my alley.)

    Here’s a joke/pun for you.

When I read the name of the candy, I immediately though “Buut crack”. That, combined with the look of the candy in the second pic (first unwrapped one) makes for a rather unpleasant mental image.

OMG!!!!! I grew up with my mother always getting them at Easter time and then hiding them from my sister and me in the freezer, then eating them at night in bed! Ten years have passed since my mom has been gone and every Easter since then we always get some butter krak eggs in remembrance of her and laugh at all the ways she used to hide them from us – one year i am going to go and put one on her grave – I KNOW SHE WOULD LOVE IT!

I read that there are new owners of the factory, who are now producing these eggs the original way, which makes the filling softer instead of drier. You might want to try one again. They are delicious! Butter Krak is definitely the best!

I’m greatful these luscious candy eggs are only made during the Easter season, because I’m a “Butter Krak” addict! I find original butter cream eggs to be overly sweet, but not the “Butter Kraks.” For me, the crunch of the toasted coconut is what creates that extraordinary pleasure in each and every bite.
