Name That Easter Candy: Hollow Chocolate Eggs

Name That Candy

We haven’t done a Name That Candy in a while and this email from a reader named Ed is perfect given our proximity to Easter. I have no idea what candy he is talking about. Anyone recognize it?

I have a question regarding an Easter treat I received as a child. Each year I received an egg crate that contained a dozen eggs that looked like real eggs. It came from italian relatives in Brooklyn NY from about 1959 to 1963. The eggs had an edible hard shell and were filled with chocolate(I believe dark chocolate) — but had a hollow center. The hollow center was about 1/3 of the egg’s area. The eggs were heavier than normal eggs. I can’t swear to it but I believe that they were from Italy or produced by an Italian Chocolatier. If you have an opportunity, I would appreciate any assistance in finding them for my grandson. Many thanks.

They sound good and a dozen?!?! That’s a lot of candy! If anyone recognizes this Easter candy and can help Ed out, leave a comment!

UPDATE: I was at World Market today and I am almost positive they had these on sale in this week’s sale circular! –Brian

I cannot believe I’m not the only one who remembers this. I was starting to think I’m delusional. I too got them in New York. My mom came up with the suggestion of looking in Little Italy.
If I find them, I’ll be sure to post it. Also, I remember there being a little trinket in the egg.

    Renee,
When I was looking I found a product called Kinder eggs which sounds more like what you are talking about.

The ones we had came in an egg carton had a hard white candy outer shell a thin milk chocolate lining and then was hollow.

I had the eggs as a child. I live near Chicago. We used to buy them at Marshall Fields. I lived in Indianapolis about 10 years ago and found them at Jacobsens. I have not seen them since.

It looked like a real egg (some type of pastel candy coating) and there was a thin lining of dark chocolate underneath creating a hollow egg. My mother said some of them were sold with toys in them. I thought they were Perugina eggs that only came out at easter time but when I look on line I dont see anything like them.

I appreciate the comments since Brian posted my e-mail. I still haven’t been able to find them but have a friend in Italy checking with some local chocolatiers. As Gwen points out, the egg had a thin shell with a lining of dark chocolate (1/4 inch think) and hollow in the center. No trinkets inside.

Thanks again for the comments. I will continue my search and post any findings.

I’ve been looking for these eggs for years. The ones we had as a child were very hard – had to slam them on something to break them apart. They were filled with a dark chocolate layer, and had a trinket. When very young, I swear they were metal charms. Later on they were like cracker jack prizes, like cars with wheels that moved. Please post if you find them. I will too.

I live in Australia and I buy these at my local market all the time. There are a few in my fridge at the moment, in fact!

They sell them individually for about $1.20 Aust and they call them hen’s eggs. They have a very hard sugar coating lined with chocolate.

I’ve also seen them in Greek and Italian delis, so that may be another place to look.

Good luck. They are yummy :-).

Every year I go online and look in the Italian pastry shops for these eggs. When I was younger we would get them from the pastry shop. I just asked the owner of the pastry shop if he remembered who put them out and he said perugina. I still can’t seem to find them It had a white candy shell with dark chocolate inside that came with a trinket inside. Sold in a egg crate. I found them a few years ago from a german website. But can’t seemed to find them ever since.

Wendy, thank you for the suggestion but I am familiar with kinder eggs and they’re not the ones. The ones I had were exactly as Ramona describes above.

I have checked all of the above links, and most are no longer active (March 2013). But I have been able to identify eggs that resemble the white coated eggs lined with chocolate: Beacon Hen’s Eggs, or Beacon Bantam Eggs. Google them for locations; these seem to be from South Africa, but obtainable in the UK. The descriptions I have read are not helpful; so far it’s not clear that these have prizes inside.

In the early 1970s I bought these every Easter from a Perugina shop in NYC (across the street from my dentist…:-) I still have a little blue Ferrari from one of them.

I will update if I find more information, and hope you will too.
