Just Born, the makers of Peeps, the holy grail of Easter candy, are on the fast track to cornering all the holidays. Peeps are now available in various colors and shapes to accommodate a variety of holidays. Did you ever think you’d be able to buy Peeps in every season? Well, Easter is the ultimate holiday for Peeps, and to celebrate this Easter, Just Born introduced several new items.

Marshmallow Peeps in green

Let’s start with the classic Peep, but hello, here they are in a lovely grass green! A few years ago Peeps started coming out in brighter hues. I remember being thrilled and yet a little frightened when I first spied the turquoise and bright lavender Peeps. I think this new green shade is very spring-like and festive.

Cocoa Peeps

For those of you who want a little added flavor to your Peeps, here are some Cocoa Peeps! I guess these are along the lines of the strawberry creme Peeps (for Valentine’s) and the sugar cookie Peeps (Christmas). I was hoping they would be really chocolatey, but the cocoa flavor is really quite subtle and practically insignificant. I don’t think Just Born should abandon flavored Peeps, but the Peeps could use a little refinement. They might be tasty in a mug of hot chocolate, though. Hmm, might have to try that one of these days …

Sugar-Free Peeps

I know, I know, it’s a complete oxymoron. After all, Peeps = sugar. Sugar-free Peeps are just wrong, right? But sometimes a wrong can make a right, particularly if you are a diabetic with a severe Peeps addiction! These Sugar-Free Peeps are made with Splenda. It kind of cracked me up how they come in this nice little packet. Clearly you get more bang for your buck with the regular old sugar-laden Peeps.

The Sugar-Free Peeps may look just like a regular Peep, but the similarities end there. The texture of the Sugar-Free Peep is rather firm, which could be good for those of you who like to let your Peeps dry out and harden slightly before consuming them. The flavor, too, is different. The standard Peep has a sweet, corn syrup-y flavor that makes it very distinct. The Sugar-Free Peep was basically flavorless. I kept having to look at the Peep clutched in my fingers to make sure I was actually eating a solid object and not just air. So, the Sugar-Free Peep was not repulsive, but again, what’s the point? It doesn’t even taste like anything!

Peeps Chick and Bunny Candy

I spotted this cute little speckled egg filled with chick and bunny treats and had to get it. It even has Peeps stickers inside! I have to say, though, that the chick and bunny candies were some of the most disgusting candies I have ever had, and let me tell you, I have tasted loads and loads of candy. The odor alone should have warned me. These tiny nuggets smelled like coconut blended with household chemicals. They were also rock hard. For Candy Addict’s sake, I bit into one, just in case it tasted differently than it smelled. Well, it tasted worse. It didn’t even taste like food. I think maybe these candies could be used to dissolve paint or fuel car fleets or hey, maybe they can be used as bullets, but they certainly should not be ingested!

I think the Cocoa Peeps are great! I don’t think the taste is “practically insignificant” – but then, I was expecting a next to nothing taste anyway since I’ve never come across a truly good-tasting original Peep. Maybe I’ve just gotten into bad lots. But that’s the only reason I tried these, because I thought maybe it would taste like more than chalk (I was right!). Anyway, I’m going to buy more cocoa ones before Easter is over, lest the vultures around here scoop ‘em all up. They’re really, really good. If I were you, I’d try to find a store that has the absolute freshest candy – maybe you got some from the first batch produced this year and hence they were blander.

I love sugar free Peeps! We NEED them in other flavors though. I can only find yellow ones. What other colors do they come in? Do you know where we can find purple sugar free Peeps?
