I never noticed that Jelly Belly made other candies for Easter besides their famous Jelly Beans. It was a pleasant surprise to see Foil Colored Eggs, Mellowecreme Mixes, and other Easter candies next to my favorite mixed bag of Jelly Beans. The Speckled Chocolate Malted Eggs looked especially tempting and next thing I knew I was unwrapping the bag for a taste outside the store.
These are exactly as the name describes; chocolate malt balls but with a candy shell. The eggs are really pretty with the speckled shells colored white, yellow, green purple and pink. They’re quite large in size, bigger than any malt balls that I’ve ever had. I find it strange how adding a candy shell really changes the taste and dynamic of the malt balls. I don’t notice the chocolate much at all because of it. My attention is drawn more toward the shell and the interior. What surprised me is that the shell is lightly flavored depending on what color you’re eating. The white and yellow taste of nothing, whereas the green has a slightly lime flavor, the purple tastes of grape and the pink of strawberry. The interior is fantastic with a rich malt flavor that other malt balls tend to be lacking.

I found these speckled eggs particularly fun because of how I like to eat them. I start by nibbling a hole and sucking out the interior, and the candy shell adds a new level of difficulty and fun to the whole eating experience. No matter how you like you eat them, these are great if you’re a fan of malt balls and would be welcome inside any Easter basket.

I love their plain malted milk balls, and of course these eggs are just gorgeous. It’s so hard to find them done with decent chocolate.
Where did you buy yours? I’ve never seen them in stores, just on the Jelly Belly website (and I imagine at the Jelly Belly stores).

The cleared out a HUGE space on the candy aisle shelf for them. It’s great! They offer not only the seasonal stuff, but the gummis, jelly bean mizes, malt balls, bridge mixes, dutch mints, etc.
