Sanders has been in the confectionery business since 1875. You don’t stick around that long without learning a thing or two about candy, and Sanders knows their candy. They sell a wide variety of treats, from chocolates to dessert toppings and even their own custom brand of hot cocoa mix. They kindly sent over a couple of samples of their most popular products: Milk Chocolate Caramels and two jars of their dessert toppings. The toppings will get their own review later, since I’m waiting until I can get some decent ice cream to accompany them. For now, let’s talk caramel.
Caramel is one of my favorite sweets. It’s basically three ingredients: sugar, butter, and cream; you can’t get much simpler than that. I love the sticky, gooey texture of it. I love how well it melds with chocolate and with nuts, and I was really looking forward to sampling these.

They are, in a word, delightful. Rich and sweet and milky, with just the right kind of chewiness that sticks to your teeth without threatening to glue your jaw shut. The caramel melts before it does any permanent damage. It also has a surprising amount of chocolate. This isn’t just a glob of caramel with a thin coat of chocolate. There’s a fairly thick milk chocolate shell surrounding the center.
I have to confess that my triumvirate of candy is milk chocolate, caramel, and nuts. So my one apprehension with trying these Milk Chocolate Caramels was the lack of nuts. I worried that this would affect the texture, but the chocolate was thick enough to provide some firmness to balance out the chewy caramel. I really liked it, but if I had my choice, I might have preferred some of their other, nut-containing products. Overall, these were quite good, and if you’re a fan of caramels, you definitely want to check them out.
Editor’s note: I tried these too and my wife and I both thought they were fantastic. The whole box was gone in no time at all.
