Retro Candy Flashback: Zotz FizzPpower Candy

Box of Zotz

Do you remember Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour (or have you ever heard of it)? I adored Farrell’s. I still remember the jingle: “Farrell’s is fabulous fun for everyone. Farrell’s is fabulous fun for everyone. Step through the door, you know what you’ll find–an ice cream parlour that’s just one of a kind!” Ahh, but I digress. My favorite part about Farrell’s was the old fashioned candy shop. Each Farrell’s restaurant had one, and it was strategically placed so you had to walk through it in order to pay the cashier and exit. I could spend hours in that candy shop! I frequently purchased candy dots (the kind that are stuck to paper), red licorice shoestrings, and rock candy, but I always bought strings of cherry-flavored Zotz.

Just thinking about Zotz makes my mouth water and that’s a little weird. Zotz are hard candies filled with a sour fizzing agent. The hard candy itself is not particularly sour, so you’ll innocently suck away on the candy when suddenly you reach the center, thus activating the fizzing substance. Your mouth is shocked with a super sour fizzy foam. It is delicious, but it is not for the weak of heart.

Farrell’s disappeared, and so did Zotz, but Zotz have staged a comeback, and they are now readily available in many places (in cherry, apple, and watermelon flavors), and all is again right with the world.

  1. In my high school, they actually used to sell them at the french club candy sale. This was about 4 years ago though.
