It’s a question that has reverberated through the ages: are chocolate chips candy? Today, we will endeavor to answer suitably.
The first question we have to answer concerns the definition of candy. According to Wikipedia, candy is basically sugar dissolved in water or milk to one or another consistency and boiled. The result can take many forms.
Next comes the question of how chocolate is produced. Again according to Wikipedia, chocolate is created by mixing various ingredients, including cocoa butter, cocoa liquor, vanilla, sugar, and sometimes milk. The key here is that sugar is mixed, not melted into the concoction.
Taking these definitions at face value, it would appear that chocolate chips don’t meet the requirements for inclusion in the candy category. While sugar is an ingredient in processed chocolate, it is not melted into the mixture. This would indicate that chocolate chips, while perhaps consumed with the same gusto as candy, can not technically be included in the same category. However, due to their remarkable eatability (who can eat just one?), I think perhaps an exception should be made and we can safely say that those who are addicted to chocolate chips are indeed Candy Addicts.
Editor’s note: Before I started this site, I can’t tell you how many times I sneaked into the pantry and grabbed a handful of chocolate chips (now, I always have pnethy of real candy on hand). If you are craving chocolate, they really hit the spot. Have you tried the swirled morsels straight from the bag? YUM! Anyone else ever raid the pantry for chocolate chips or are we the only ones?

A friend of mine grabs a handful of chocolate chips and throws it in a bowl with a few tablespoons of smooth peanut butter. Then they sit right down on the couch and eat it. I know people like chocolate and peanut butter, but this seems a little bit of an extreme way to go about it. I tried it… and it was almost too rich to have more then one bite.

October 20th, 2006 at 1:17 pmYes. So much so that I had to ban the chocolate chips from my house. They caused me to binge too much.
October 20th, 2006 at 2:17 pmI think chips can be candy depends how you eat them
October 20th, 2006 at 4:32 pmif I melt them into molds they’d be candy so yes I think they are candy.
Yes. Definitely.
October 20th, 2006 at 4:44 pmIf chocolate chips are not candy, then neither are chocolate bars of any kind, right? By the Wikipedia definition, would a Snickers or a Reese’s be candy?
October 20th, 2006 at 6:45 pmHere’s what I think: Chocolate is a subcategory (among so many other subcategories) of candy. And chocolate chips are simply one form of chocolate. Just because we stir them into cookies does not preclude them from being candy. Anyone with me?
One, not the only ones. NOT THE ONLY ONES. And I believe that they classify as candy. Mmmmm…
October 20th, 2006 at 6:45 pmI think chocolate chips are both a baking aid AND a candy, and I often do eat them “as is” when I have them in the house. All they are is teeny-tiny chocolate kisses.
October 20th, 2006 at 8:11 pmMy kids think chocolate chips are candy. I think they are, too.
October 20th, 2006 at 10:25 pmAh, but you are all missing the point!
Candy is a state of mind. So chocolate is definitely candy.
