As I mentioned yesterday in the sneak peek at the Sausage and Pickle Harry Potter jellybeans, Cap Candy (Hasbro’s candy division) sent me two new Harry Potter candies – the jelly beans and these new Harry Potter Blood Pops. They aren’t scheduled to hit stores until early 2007, but I got to try them a little ahead of time and share them with you.
These pre-release Blood Pops came in generic clear wrappers – I’m assuming the final package design hasn’t been finalized yet. The note that came with them said “turns your mouth bloody red”. From some research I did online (since I haven’t read the books), the Blood Pops in the stories are made with blood and are sold mainly to vampires. I am not a vampire (that I know of), but I figured a “bloody red” mouth might be fun.
The lollipops are a nice size – not too big, not too small – they are about 1.25″ by 1″. When I eat a lollipop, I don’t want a meal, I want a snack. These are just right. The pops are coated with a red film – it looked like crushed strawberries with seeds (you can see it pretty well on the left one in this picture). That stuff is what makes your mouth bloody red. After I had sucked on it enough to remove that coating I looked at my tongue in the mirror and indeed it was “bloody red”. Cool.
It’s a temporary condition though because by the time I had finished the lollipop my mouth wasn’t red anymore. The flavor is. well, a bit odd. It vaguely reminds me of strawberry, but that’s not quite it. To be honest I’m not sure what it tastes like (hopefully it’s not actually blood-flavored). It wasn’t the best flavor in the world, but it wasn’t the worst either.
Thanks again to the gang at Cap Candy for the chance to preview these great new Harry Potter candies. Look for some more coverage of Cap Candy soon and look for Harry Potter Blood Pops at a Muggle store near you sometime in early 2007!
