Duchamp did it by drawing a mustache on Mona Lisa. I think the fact that fine art is being used is exciting because my students come to class excited over having recognized a painting. A car ad awhile back used Munch's "The Scream" as a backdrop to show how fast the car was. This isn't a new concept by far and M&M's isn't original in using it. And it's not as if they are making some kind of statement (aside from, "buy M&Ms") by revising this particular work of art, but they're just completely violating it. If this keeps on, for all you know in 10 years M&M will be buying original works of art and painting on them. Sure, there are much bigger things in the world to get upset about, but little things like this aren't helping. It definately happens all the time in ads, but that doesn’t make it right..
