Somebody call Webster’s, I think there is a new definition of irony…. a candy maker is purchasing a health food company. That’s right, Nestle, the candy-maker extraordinaire, responsible for such brands as Dreyer’s Ice Cream, KitKat & Stouffer’s, announced that they will be purchasing weight loss company Jenny Craig.
Nestle will be purchasing the company from its current owners ACI Capital and MidOcean Partners for $600 million dollars. The deal, which is set to close by October, makes a little more sense if you know that Nestle also already owns the health brands Power Bar & Lean Cuisine. The don’t limit themselves to food though, they also are partial owners of L’Oreal, Friskies cat food and many others.
Nestle Chairman and Chief Executive Peter Brabeck-Letmathe had this to say about the deal, “With this strategic acquisition, the group takes another important step in its transformation process into a nutrition, health and wellness company.”
