Recently, Cheri McSpaden from the Holland Sentinel newspaper out of Holland, Michigan asked me if she could use my picture of Deep Fried Snickers (seen above) in a newspaper article. I said she could as long as she sent me a copy of the newspaper page it was used on.
She held to her word and I received the paper last week. She wrote an article on deep-fried treats called “Throw sugary treats in the deep-fat fryer” – it covers deep-frying of things like Oreos, Twinkies, and Snickers and she used my picture in the article! Very cool. She also said lots of nice things about the site:
Take a look at this:
http://candyaddict. com/blog/2005/10/26/deep-fried-snickers.Yes, that’s right, deep-fried Snickers.
I’m a new fan of Brian Pipa, the owner/creator of candyaddict.com, who writes, “I savored the last bite and there was nothing left but the paper container; a long, pointy skewer; and powdered sugar all over my shirt. I cannot truly express how good it was. On a scale of one to 10, it was a 12. Incredible. Amazing. And probably enough fat and calories to clog every one of my arteries – twice. If you ever have the opportunity to try a deep-fried candy bar, do it.”
To some it may be no big deal to be mentioned in a newspaper but I thought it was very cool. Candy Addict has been mentioned on radio and in a newspaper now. Maybe I’ll be on TV next (but I won’t be holding my breath).

Congrats! Couldn’t happen to a nicer candy addict.

April 26th, 2006 at 11:34 amAs a former newspaper reporter I don’t know if I’m dismayed or awed by the story. Not for you, because you’re website is awesome, but for the fact some reporter decided to basically copy a blog posting and turn it into an article. I know, she wrote her own piece…but it took no digging to get this story. It’s a total fluff piece. It’s like the laziest kind of story ever. Unless there was some specific local angle to it I can’t see the relavance to her readers of fried candy bars. It’s like running a press release as a news story and calling it a day just because it fills the news hole.
Then again, I used to copy news story ideas all the time from the local weeklys that were smaller than my paper, so I understand the impulse.
