Two more Dollar General Store candy reviews today…the first one is Tutti Frutti Hit. These are essentially Tic Tac knockoffs. The Tutti Frutti pack contains many different colors, each is a different flavor. The flavors are: purple is grape, yellow is lemon, orange is orange, green is green apple, and red is strawberry.
Again, I wasn’t expecting much from these but, just as the Rocklets were good, so are these. I haven’t had a Tic Tac in years, but these have the same texture that I remember in a Tic Tac. The yellow is by far my favorite…reminds me of a Lemonhead. This package was only 0.5 oz compared to a Tic Tac’s 0.63 oz, but Hit only cost me a cool quarter.
I started to ask what kind of name is “Hit” but I guess we could ask the same question about “Tic Tac”.

The boxes of Hulk and Flintstones Candy Sticks were only $0.10 each at the Dollar General Store so I couldn’t resist. It turns out these “candy sticks” are what I remember from childhood as being candy cigarettes. Yes, these are shorter and there is no red coloring on the tip, but these are candy cigarettes. They taste like them too – sort of chalky and not very tasty.
The other candy sticks were Spider-Man and Wolverine from X-Men. I have to believe that the Fred got put into the wrong box – he’s definitely no superhero (though he powers and brakes his car with his feet – that’s super if you ask me). And who does Fred Flintstone appeal to? Kids nowadays don’t even know who he is – I can’t remember the last time I saw The Flintsones on TV. So do they make the Fred Flintsones Candy Sticks for guys like me on a retro kick?
Aha – I just found these online and indeed The Flintstones come in a different box and there are other cartoons too. Here are Superhero candy sticks, The Flintstones, Popeye, and Tom and Jerry.
Candy sticks get a thumbs up from me for novelty, nostalgia, and price.
I think the candies are called HIT because there’s a HIT of flavor in each piece
April 7th, 2006 at 2:07 amI thought candy cigarettes were tasty when i was a kid. They were flavored with mint. (I love mint-flavored anything!) How cool is that? A “cigarette” that makes breath fresh! Great pre-date candy!
RESPONSE: The candy cigarettes I had when I was a kid weren’t minty – at least I don’t think they were. These weren’t minty either.

I seem to recall candy cigarettes had a slight wintergreen flavor to them.

March 16th, 2007 at 8:07 amI agree, HITs are pretty good for dollar store candy. I don’t like the green apple ones but the rest are actually decent. :)
