With the recent introduction of new Trident Splash gum, it got me thinking about some of the original “liquid center” gums from the past. Remember Chewels, Tidal Wave, and Freshen-up (”the gum that goes SQUIRT”)? I remember when they first came out and how “revolutionary” and different they were. I also remember sometimes sucking out all the liquid center before chewing the gum.
Chewels are no longer made and neither is Tidal Wave, but, despite not having seen them in stores for years, Freshen-up gum is still being made today and can be found at many online candy stores and even Amazon sells Freshen-up.
Here’s a Freshen-Up commercial. How many of you remember this commercial? I do. “The gum that goes SQUIRT!”
Here’s a Tidal Wave Gum commercial:

I LOVED this stuff! As a kid, I would burn through a pack of this in no time, just because I loved the sugary syrup in the middle!
I also remember some soda brands came out with a similar product: A&W root beer gum; Dr. Pepper gum — all with a soda-tasting liquid center! Mmmmmmm…..
RESPONSE: I mentioned some of those when I talked about soda-flavored candy

You finally mentioned a retro candy that I actually remember! I liked this gum a lot. My favorite was the cinnamon-flavored one.
March 16th, 2006 at 8:26 pmI still remember the first time I had liquid-center gum–I was 4, and it was A&W rootbeer flavored. I actually didn’t like it because it was something unexpected (hey I was only 4).
7-11 markets several flavors of liquid-center gum. I tried the watermelon flavor and it was alright. I think they also have green apple, but green apple=yuck to my mouth.
March 19th, 2006 at 8:50 pmDoes anyone remember Freshen-up in fruit flavor ??? I am looking for someone that sells it.
Thanks
RESPONSE: I don’t think they make it anymore. If you go to the manufacturer’s home page then go to Contact and choose Freshen-up, it does not list fruit as a flavor.

UPDATE: I emailed the manufacturer and they don’t make fruit flavor.

I’ll never forget the nickname I heard in high school — “cum gum.” Eww.
RESPONSE: I did NOT need to know that.

Hey, I thought I was the only one that sucked the liquid center out than chewing the gum. What a small world! I’m so happy I found where to buy this. I told my kids about this gum and want them to try it. Remember another “old school” candy called Zotz they had center to it but it was some kind powdery frizz. You also buy that online. -Seti
March 28th, 2007 at 10:48 amAh… Squirty gum. I love the 80s! Dr. Pepper was easily my favorite.
I’ve tried Trident Splash, but has a few things going against it: the flavor (strawberry-kiwi?), not enough liquid (assuming it was actuall a good flavor), and I think the candy shell gets in the way of a good time.
Gimme those square chunks filled with syrup anyday!
August 7th, 2007 at 10:52 pmDoes anyone remember Purple Lava Gum? I loved this stuff when I was in grammer school in the 80’s. It was similar to nerds, but when you eat it, it changes to gum. It was in a lavender package with a volcano in the front. the gum was grape flavor.
December 28th, 2007 at 12:52 pmYour site just made my night. Thanks for the memories….
