Retro Candy Flashback: Powder-Filled Plastic Fruit

Candy powder-filled plastic fruit

I haven’t thought of these in years. I used to get them at the little league field with a Suicide (remember those? - a little bit of every fountain soda flavor all mixed into one cup). They were these little plastic fruit-shaped containers filled with fruit-flavored powder. The twist-tops were green and had a little loop on them so that you could make a necklace out of it.

I remember collecting all the different fruits and stringing them onto necklaces and even using them as bath/pool toys. The powder had a good fruity flavor like the fruit container it came in - grape, strawberry, cherry, orange, banana, and pineapple. I also remember you couldn’t put your mouth on it and pour it in your mouth or it would clog the opening.

My daughter got one of these (banana) over the weekend while at Bullwinkle’s (think Chuck E. Cheese only with Rocky and Bullwinkle - complete with animatronics) and I was shocked to see they still make them. (It cost us 50 tickets in case you were wondering.) I poked around online and found a few places you can get them:

Anyone else remember these?

These are great! We have a small, family-owned hot dog stand near our home that, to this day, gives these things out as the “extra” in the kids’ meals sacks.

    RESPONSE: Awesome! :)

I was JUST reminiscing about these a couple of weeks ago. 6th grade was ALL about the plastic fruits (and Bubble Burgers) - my friends and I would walk over to Payless after school and buy them before basketball practice. Needless to say, our game was keenly elevated by these fortified little gems. Pure sugar is the best performance enhancer when you’re 11. Red Bull, Shmed Shmull! Raspberry was my fave! Oh… sugar….

Ha…I love these things…they sell them at the drug store with the candies that come in packages that say 1 for $.59 or 2 for $1.00! mmmm…

I’m so glad you posted some info about the best powdered candy in the world! I tried several times to remember all the fruits, then got worried I’d made up one just because I wish it had been real. Now I know that my memory was true to life. I’m also glad I’m not the only one who found out about the clogged opening. That was sooo frustrating.

I buy them at the Dollar Tree or Party City and pour out the candy, tie the caps on a flowered lei. Then I fill the fruits with liquor and put them on the lei to go in to Jimmy Buffett concerts or walk around the streets of Key West during our ParrotHead convention ;)

I was searching for these for my little girl’s webkinz party. I am making a wishing well and remember these from when I was young. I can’t believe they still sell these. I want to put them in the well for the birthday party game. Thanks
