Stump the Candy Addict: Canadian Fiber Starburst Candy

Categories: Candy,Name That Candy

Name That Candy

I got an email recently from a reader named Joanie who is trying to find the name of a candy she had a year or so in Canada. It’s got me stumped. Can anyone out there help Joanie? Here is her email:

About a year or more ago there was a candy, made in Canada that looked and tasted like starburst squares. It was high in fiber. I was told the FDA had not approved it so they took it off the market. I cannot think of its name. Is there anyone who knows what it was and if you can get it anywhere.

Joanie

Please help Joanie out and post answers/clues/leads in the comments section.

UPDATE: Thanks to a reader named Sparkina, we have the proposal that it is BodySmarts candy. This article says they are fruit chews which fits with the Starburst idea. This page describes them as

BODYSMARTS Creamy Fruit Chews is a candy that is similar to Starburst candy, but is much healthier for you. Made with real fruit juice, 6g of fiber and 100% RDA Vitamin C, with Calcium, Vitamins A & E, and even a little Iron, it’s a better snack than just regular candy.

Sounds right. Joanie? (Joanie said YES)

UPDATE2: Evidently, Adams/Pfizer withdsrew them from the market in 2001 according to this webpage:

launch of a “good for you” range of confectionery products, Body Smarts, in Canada and the US. This was not a commercial success in the US and was withdrawn from the market during 2001.

So I would say the chances of finding any are pretty slim. :(

I did find some pages on the net with pictures of the logo: here is one and here is another and another and another.

The original website for the candy was http://www.adambodysmarts.ca (nothing there now)

In the late 90s, there was a line of candy called BodySmarts — fortified candy. Nutritional enhancers disguised as candy — and they had fiber-and-vitamin fortified fruit chew squares (quite yummy, actually)

Candy Addict -- Name That Candy Vol. 2 says:

[...] Last time I tried this, I called it “Stump The Candy Addict”, but a better name should have been “Stump The Candy Addict Readers”, since it was a reader that came up with the answer (good job, Sparkina!). So, from now on, these segments will be called Name That Candy. If I can’t name it, I’ll present it to you, the reader (so far I’m 0 for 2). [...]

Does anyone know the calcium content in Smarties Candy? I know that there is calcium stearate in them, but how much counts as “a daily nutritional amount of calcium”??

Doesn’t mention calcium so I would imagine that means it’s insignificant. You could email the company directly to find out for sure though.
