Mike and Ike Popcorn

I stumbled upon this at panic.com while checking out their amazing shopping cart. This is a page full of food reviews done by two American and two Japanese reviewers. For example, when tasting Mike and Ike Buttered Popcorn candy, Kaori says:

“Are a sweet candy and salty popcorn friends? As for me, the feeling became bad by simply imagining.”

    Candy Kid–

I might not have ever discovered your wonderful blog if not for the fact that you posted on mine. For now, at least, I’ve fallen WAY off the candy-free wagon (and let’s be honest, Halloween is a DEADLY season for recovering candy junkies) and I’ve been sneaking into my sons’ trick-or-treat bags after they go to bed each night. Unfortunately, my older boy (age 8) now manages to keep a complete & accurate mental inventory of his entire candy stash, and so I can’t easily get away with swiping his candy. Thus I prey upon his little brother, who tends to be rather apathetic about his own candy supply and doesn’t seem to notice–or care–whether any of his treats have disappeared (and so I feel relatively little guilt about my thievery).

Anyway, I found your blog just by an amazing twist of fate, but now I check it whenever I get a chance. Tonight I finally took the time to read the panic.com page you referenced, complete with its thoroughly amusing “Japanenglish” and its thumbs up-or-down rating system. Well, I laughed so hard I started to cough, and I narrowly avoided having a full-blown asthma attack. Thanks for sharing that link!

By the way, what really caught my attention about this particular post was the picture of the Buttered Popcorn Mike and Ike box. Until I saw this post, I had no idea such a candy abomination even existed. Until now, I had thought that buttered popcorn-flavored Jelly Bellys were the absolute worst candy on the face of the earth (and I don’t mean to insult the Jelly Belly company, because I love a lot of their beans, but WHAT WERE THEY THINKING when they created that noxious flavor?! Were they on crack or something?). Seriously. I have polled every friend and relative of mine who has ever sampled even one buttered popcorn Jelly Belly, and the response I have received from EVERY SINGLE PERSON went something like this: “Those jelly beans are so horrible, I’d probably vomit if I was forced to eat another one. Eating a buttered popcorn Jelly Belly is like eating a pellet of pseudo-butter flavored fat, with a few grains of sugar encrusted on its exterior.” Hey, I love buttered popcorn, and I love (most) Jelly Bellys. And yet I’ve never considered it necessary or intelligent to try to combine the two into one snack item (to me, popcorn and jelly beans are two worlds that should never collide, except for when Snoopy puts the two on the Thanksgiving plates of the Peanuts gang–that scene is my favorite out of all the Charlie Brown holiday movies). Everyone I know (including myself) is quite baffled about why the J.B. company would keep producing a bean that NOBODY seems to like. Who actually eats–let alone BUYS–those repulsive things? Anyway, it sounds as if Mike and Ike’s version of a pseudo-butter flavored pellet of fat has the potential to surpass the Jelly Belly version, for the title of MOST DISGUSTING SO-CALLED “CANDY” I’VE EVER EATEN. I may just end up getting a box, just so I can see for myself exactly how gross these things really are.

Aside from my rant about buttered popcorn-flavored candy, I just wanted to say keep up the good work. Even if I weren’t a confirmed candy addict, I would read your blog just because it’s really clever and quite entertaining.

RESPONSE: Wow! Thanks for all the comments and the rambling – I agree with you on the buttered popcorn Jelly Belly – but I have met people who did like them and said they even loved (gasp) them! BTW – you are now in the Candy Addict’s Hall of Fame as the longest non-spam comment! I almost feel like I should make your entire comment its own post!

I like the buttered popcorn jelly bean. But, I don’t believe I’ve had more than 3 at one “eating”. And now that I think about it, I bet they would be rather gross in large quantities. But that’s how I feel about chinese food, too. I like it for about the first 5 bites… and then I’m just disappointed over the choice I made. But, realthirtysomething is right, I haven’t heard anyone else I know personally liking them.

I love the buttered popcorn jelly bean. Japan though has a corn flavor chocolate. :( It has won about four awards go figure. No question though American candy is utter crap compared to Japanese candy.
