Before I started this site, I never realized how often rap/hip-hop intersects with candy. It’s happened once again. What you see above are prototypes of a “Fallen Rapper” PEZ series done by a sculptor and sent into the PEZ company. It’s an interesting and funny story about this guy trying to get PEZ to actually make these. Some great quotes from the site:
there has been little representation of African-American culture (save the “Psychedelic Eye with Black Hand” and the “Misfit Witch with Brilliant Black Head”).
and later:
I am sure I needn’t remind you of the historical significance of these influential African-American artists.
and the response from PEZ:
Unfortunately our audience is geared to 3 to 6 year olds and therefore your proposal for the “Fallen Rapper PEZ” series would not fit into our criteria
and, after receiving this letter from PEZ, he tries some other ideas:
Who are the greatest “non-violent” roll [sic] models of all times? Jesus and God, of course! What child would not benefit from gazing at the image of our lord as they enjoy their candy?
The whole site is well worth a read for a good laugh.
