I live in western New York and the large grocery stores always seem to have the Canadian made smarties in the bulk bins. The pre packaged ones tend to be the US made ones. I don't know if it is our proximity, but I have never seen a correlation with Halloween here.

Got this from wikipedia:

"Smarties produced by Ce De Candy's Union Township, Union County, New Jersey, plant have a slightly different taste from the ones that are produced by their Newmarket, Ontario, plant. The Canadian ones generally taste stronger, with more noticeable differences between the various color flavors. The Canadian candies (branded as Rockets) say "Made in Canada" on the label at the ends after the list of ingredients. Canadian made Smarties are also imported into the US - typically, these Canadian Smarties are most commonly seen in the U.S. around Halloween, likely imported only when the US production is not sufficient for demand. These actually say "Made in Canada" under one of the main Smarties logos on the wrapper. Upon close inspection, these Canadian made Smarties have a slightly smoother look to them than US production - the US produced ones tend to have more colored "specks" present in them."

Eh, as a canadian I find it irronic that American Smarties are our much beloved Rockets {AKA, hyperpills!}
They are awsome but who can survive with out the 'Do you eat the red ones last?' and the added bonuses of smarties probability assignements. {grade three all the way!}

Here's a website... i too have been looking to get some of the chocolatey smarties. I visited Canada once and have loved them since. I only recently remembered my love for them when my friend mentioned them to me!

My girlfriend just mentioned the difference between the smarties and rockets and I would like to get her some since she's from Canada. Being from Kansas it's a little hard to get there to buy a few. Does anyone know a website where I could purchase rockets at? Thank You!

Omigod, GIANT SMARTIES (the chocolate kind)!? I live in Canada and don't recall seeing them. Well I suppose for my waist line that would be a good thing. The chocolate in Smarties is much better tasting than in M&M's. The only M&M's I can stand are the one's with peanut butter. I am not really sure how to describe the difference, but it can't just be in my head! I've had Rockets and American Smarties and they taste very similar to me.

Smarties here in the UK used to come in a cardboard tube with a plastic lid at one end. (The lid usually had a letter embossed on it.)
In the past year or so the tube was replaced with a cardboard hexagonal tube, and an institution was lost.
